New Books in Native American Studies - Manu Karuka, “Empire’s Tracks: Indigenous Nations, Chinese Workers, and the Transcontinental Railroad” (U California Press, 2019)

What does anti-imperialism look like from the vantage point of North America? In Empire’s Tracks: Indigenous Nations, Chinese Workers, and the Transcontinental Railroad(University of California Press, 2019), Manu Karuka (Barnard College) answers this question by reinterpreting the significance of the transcontinental railroad from the perspectives of Chinese workers and Indigenous peoples—in particular the Paiute, Lakota, Pawnee, and Cheyenne. Karuka proposes three new concepts—counter-sovereignty, continental imperialism, and modes of relationship— for our understanding of this history. The interdisciplinary scholarship of Empire’s Tracks engages with writers ranging from W.E.B. Du Bois to Frederick Jackson Turner to Ella Deloria, and draws also from legal, legislative, military, and business records. Ultimately, Karuka gives the lie to exceptionalist narratives of the United States by showing how its transportation infrastructure, like those around the world, emerged violently at the nexus of war and finance.

The Gist - Saving Civilians, and the Mission

On The Gist, Trump visits the UK and drags London’s mayor.

In the interview, Larry Lewis doesn’t just analyze civilian casualties in the midst of wars; he’s worked within the State Department to minimize them. His research makes clear that sparing non-combatants isn’t just morally laudable, it can help generals reach their objectives and reduce anti-American sentiment.

In the Spiel, is Caster Semenya running?

The Daily Signal - #477: This Liberal Wall Street Trader Predicted Trump’s Win. What He Learned Traveling Across US.

One day, Chris Arnade strolled into an area of New York City he rarely ventured into: the Bronx. That day began a journey, spent in McDonalds and churches, in drug dens and places where the homeless congregate, for the Wall Street trader. In his new book, "Dignity: Seeking Respect in Back Row America," Arnade highlights the America too many of our elites would rather ignore. He joins the podcast to share what he learned about politics (and why he correctly predicted Donald Trump would win in 2016), religion, addiction, and much more. We also cover these stories:•There were 144,000 migrants apprehended at the U.S. - Mexico border in May.•A teacher who is transitioning from male to female made a video he showed to his elementary school students to explain his new persona.•YouTube is tightening its censorship.
