In the Bubble with Andy Slavitt - What You Need to Know About COVID Vaccines and Variants (with Katelyn Jetelina)

Is the new BA 2.86 variant the latest in a wave of deadly outbreaks, or just a "scariant" that is all hype? Will the new COVID booster shots work against this latest variant, and when is the best time to get an updated vaccine to be protected this winter? These are just some of the key questions that Andy asks epidemiologist and In the Bubble fan fave Dr. Katelyn Jetelina on this week’s episode. This episode is everything you’ve wanted to know about COVID for this fall, all in one show.

What A Day - Hey Google, Why Is The DOJ Suing You

The government’s antitrust trial against Google kicked off yesterday as lawyers for the Department of Justice gave opening statements in their case. They argued that Google illegally created a monopoly with its titular search engine to squash competitors like Yahoo and Bing. We’re joined by Sara Morrison, senior tech reporter at Vox, to break down the case, why it matters and what comes next.

And in headlines: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy ordered a formal impeachment inquiry into President Biden, a federal grand jury indicted the five former Memphis police officers involved in the beating death of Tyre Nichols and the CDC recommended that everyone six months and older get an updated COVID-19 vaccine.

The Daily Signal - Xi, Putin ‘Want to Create Their Own New Rules,’ Asian Studies Expert Says

Two world leaders, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, did not attend the Group of 20 summit held in New Delhi, which concluded on Sunday.

Erin Walsh, senior research fellow for international affairs in The Heritage Foundation's Asian Studies Center, says that "clearly, the two of them made a decision that they weren't going to show up."

"[A]nd they want to create their own new rules, and new economy, and new standards, and new world, for that matter; for the world to play by the rules that they set forward, and I think that this was a first stab at that," Walsh says.

"So, we're going to have to wait and see what happens at the upcoming [Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation] summit, but it's clear that they wanted to do that," she says, adding:

And also, the fact that I think China was pouting because they are not supportive of India, there's tension between the two nations, and China wants to show that they had the upper hand and would not go to India, on [Indian Prime Minister Narendra] Modi's soil, to pay that kind of respect. And so, that tells you something about Xi Jinping, which is more than we probably want to know.

APEC will host its summit in mid-November in San Francisco.

Walsh joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss President Joe Biden's recent comments that he doesn't "want to contain China" and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's meeting with Putin.

The Allusionist - 181. Cairns

There's an abiding myth that the landmark dictionaries are the work of one man, in a dusty paper-filled garrett tirelessly working away singlehandedly. But really it took a village: behind every Big Daddy of Lexicography was usually a team of women, keeping the garrett clean, organising the piles of papers, reading through all the citations, doing research, writing definitions, editing, subediting...essentially being lexicographers, without the credit or the pay. Academic Lindsay Rose Russell, author of Women and Dictionary-Making, talks about the roles of women in lexicography: enabling male lexicographers to get the job done, but also making their own dictionaries, and challenging the very paradigms of dictionaries.

Amarica's Constitution - An Officer and a President

Two recent major podcast themes - section 3 of the fourteenth amendment, and judicial ethics - echoed through the news this past week.  Wisconsin legislators seek to impeach a new state Supreme Court Justice before she even sits for a case; and in Washington, Justice Alito is asked to recuse himself because of an interview he gave. Meanwhile, Section 3 is addressed by a former US Attorney General, who says it is inapplicable to the President for reasons that may seem counterintuitive, even strange.  We analyze the claims as well as what lies behind them in our constitutional system. Short Wave - Animal Crossing: The Destructive Nature of Roads

40 million miles of road unite us. They also cause mass destruction for many species. Today, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb and host Aaron Scott go on a tour of that destruction — the subject of Ben's new book Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet. But don't worry, it's not all grim! Along the way, we learn why fewer insects are hitting our windshields, talk about the breakthrough that is highway overpasses, and how at least one bird has adapted to avoid 18-wheel semi-trucks.
