What A Day - From Foe to Bro: JD Vance is Trump’s VP

Former President Donald Trump chose Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate on Monday, just as Republicans kicked off their national convention in Milwaukee. Vance, who rose to fame in 2016 with his memoir ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ has undergone a radical political transformation in the years since. Once an outspoken critic of Trump, Vance is now one of the former president’s biggest supporters in Congress. Zack Beauchamp, a senior correspondent for Vox and author of the new book “The Reactionary Spirit,” explains why Vance was a logical pick for Trump.

And in headlines: Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the assassination attempt against former president  Trump at the weekend rally was a security “failure,” Special Counsel Jack Smith says he’ll appeal a federal judge’s decision to dismiss Trump’s classified documents case, and President Biden reiterated his plans to stay in the presidential race during an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt.

The Daily Signal - From RNC: Congressman Says GOP Will Be Ready This Time If Republicans Wins Presidency and Congress

With the election less than four months away, a lot can happen, but Rep. Andy Ogles says he’s confident Republicans can win back the presidency and the Senate, and retain control of the House in November.

“And as Republicans, we're going to win the White House. They're going to win the Senate. We're going to increase our majority in the House of Representatives,” Ogles, R-Tenn., said in an interview with “The Daily Signal Podcast” on Monday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

During the 115th Congress from 2016 to 2018, Republicans controlled the House and the Senate, and after January of 2017, Donald Trump was president, and yet the accomplishments of the 115th Congress were disappointing to many conservatives. But Ogles says Republicans are more prepared to implement a conservative agenda today than they were back then.

“We're having those tough conversations today, so that when we get into that first 100 days, that we have a plan, we have a message, it's been tested, it's been debated,” the Tennessee lawmaker says.

Listen to Ogles' full interview discussion of the election, the assassination attempt on Trump, and the former president’s latest legal victory on “The Daily Signal Podcast."

Short Wave - This Mysterious Energy Is Everywhere. Scientists Still Don’t Know What It Is

The universe — everything in existence — is expanding every second! It's only been about a hundred years that humanity has known this, too — that most galaxies are traveling away from us and the universe is expanding. Just a few decades ago, in the late 1990s, scientists started to notice another peculiar thing: The expansion of the universe is speeding up over time. It's like an explosion where the debris gets faster instead of slowing down. The mysterious force pushing the universe outward faster and faster was named dark energy. Cosmologist Brian Nord joins host Regina G. Barber in a conversation that talks about what dark energy could be and what it implies about the end of our universe.
