Philosophers In Space - 0G69: The Power and Cyborg Theory, Part 1

Finally! We've been waiting so long for this, I almost thought we'd never get here. And by here I mean the collapse of the patriarchy.

If only pod notes made it so. No, this week and next we're cover Naomi Alderman's The Power. To keep us from mansplaining our way through a feminist classic, we're joined by our future gender overlord, Hannah Marcus (@sligers118 on Twitter), a MA student in cultural studies who has done work specifically on The Power. We start by covering the feminist Cyborg theory, and then begin to apply that theory to one of the most multifaceted texts we've examined so far.

The Gist - Are Attention Spans Shrinking?

On The Gist, Biden’s gaffes.

In the interview, Maria Konnikova, author of The Confidence Game, is back for another round of Is That Bullshit? This time she and Mike talk all about attention spans. There always seem to be claims that attention spans are shrinking, but is that true? Should we be worried that we feel distracted more and more or just take a deep breath and embrace it?

The Intelligence from The Economist - Sex cells: the modern fertility business

Companies are rushing to fill new niches for would-be parents: in vitro fertilisation extras, swish egg-harvesting “studios” and apps to track reproductive health. But some companies promise more than science can deliver. The worrying flare-up of piracy off west Africa presents new challenges and unmitigated risks to sailors. And, lessons learned from a shooting simulator for police.

What Next | Daily News and Analysis - The Gangs and Corruption Fueling the Border Crisis

The demographics of migrants crossing the southern border of the United States have changed over the last several decades. What used to be young Mexican men seeking economic opportunity has turned into families seeking refuge from broken Central American governments.  Sonia Nazario has spent decades reporting from Honduras, a country where corruption runs rampant and gangs have become the de facto government. She says that the foreign aid that the Trump administration has cut off to Central America is the very aid that could help solve the crisis at the southern border.

Guest: Sonia Nazario, journalist and author of Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with His Mother
