The Daily Signal - How the War on History Is Rewriting America’s Past

A generation ago, America’s Founding Fathers were venerated. Today, they’re more likely to be under attack from the media, teachers, and politicians. And it’s not just the Founders, but our founding documents, institutions, and other leaders from our past. Our colleague, Jarrett Stepman, has written about all this in a new book called “The War on History: The Conspiracy to Rewrite America's Past.” In today’s episode, Kate Trinko, our editor-in-chief, sits down with Jarrett to unpack what this effort is all about.

We also cover these stories:

  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rejects House efforts to get testimony from top State Department officials amid whistleblower feud
  • U.S. manufacturing hits 10-year low amid trade war
  • A sixth-grade student in Virginia recants her accusation against three boys

Philosophers In Space - 0G74: Cloud Dragon Skies and Geoengineering

Those who can't accept the state of reality are doomed to dissatisfaction. Those who can accept the state of reality are doomed to things being as they are.

We're reading N.K. Jemisin's short story Cloud Dragon Skies, which I highly recommend you read carefully before the episode and then reread after the episode because we have a very interesting difference of experiences on how we read it that we discuss on the show, and we want to hear your experiences! We also discuss the ethics of geoengineering, in particular some less often cited non-consequentialist arguments. This episode and other stuff we've been doing has me really thinking about how it's even possible to find a balance between acceptance and progress.

Ologies with Alie Ward - Osteology (SKELETONS/BODY FARMS) with Daniel Wescott

Let's dig right into Spooktober with ... BONES. You're a steak-covered skeleton and it's nothing to fear. The amazingly kind and committed osteologist Dr. Daniel J. Wescott of Texas State University's famed Forensic Anthropology Research Center sits down -- surrounded by skulls and femurs and ribs -- and chats about how bones are formed, how they break, why they might hurt when the weather changes, what CSI gets wrong, how long it takes a body to decompose, looking for isotopes in found remains, cast iron coffins, skeleton myths, body donation, and more. Will Alie freak out, or will this exposure to hundreds of skeletons under one roof chill her out?

Also, dickbones: are they for winners or losers?

The Intelligence from The Economist - Party like it’s 1949: China’s National Day

As at the founding of the People’s Republic, the 70th anniversary featured a tightly controlled parade bristling with the country’s latest military kit. That marks a sharp contrast to the growing chaos in Hong Kong, where a protest spirit has sparked new art, and an impromptu anthem. And, we ask if hot-desking costs employees more than companies are saving.

The Best One Yet - Waymo’s valuation plummets, RV-giant Thor Industries jumps 16% on global camping, and Budweiser’s Asia IPO

Bud had a hefty bar tab, so it just spun-off its Asia beer business — and the IPO proved unsexy business models may be sexy again. Google’s self-driving car division just had its valuation slashed because it’s taking. Way. Too. Long. To. Arrive. And the world’s biggest RV-maker, Thor Industries, jumped 16% because camping is going global. Learn more about your ad choices.
