Security Unlocked - Securing the Internet of Things

There used to be a time when our appliances didn’t talk back to us, but it seems like nowadays everything in our home is getting smarter. Smart watches, smart appliances, smart lights - smart everything! This connectivity to the internet is what we call the Internet of Things (IoT). It’s becoming increasingly common for our everyday items to be “smart,” and while that may provide a lot of benefits, like your fridge reminding you when you may need to get more milk, it also means that all of those devices become susceptible to cyber attacks.

On this episode of Security Unlocked, hosts Nic Fillingham and Natalia Godyla talk to Arjmand Samuel about protecting IoT devices, especially with a zero trust approach. Listen in to learn not only about the importance of IoT security, but also what Microsoft is doing to protect against such attacks and how you can better secure these devices.

In This Episode You Will Learn:

  • What the techniques are to verify explicitly on IoT devices
  • How to apply the zero trust model in IoT
  • What Microsoft is doing to protect against attacks on IoT

Some Questions We Ask:

  • What is the difference between IoT and IT?
  • Why is IoT security so important?
  • What are the best practices for protecting IoT?

What A Day - The Strike At Warrior Met Coal

Miners at Warrior Met Coal in Brookwood, Alabama, have been striking for nearly four months in protest of drastic cutbacks to wages and benefits. It’s one of the largest work-stoppages in the state’s recent history. We hear from Haeden Wright, a United Mine Workers supporter and a miner’s wife, and Kim Kelly, a labor reporter for The Nation magazine, about the current status of the strike and the rising tide of violence and hostility that strikers face.

And in headlines: Biden condemns Republican voter suppression efforts, Tennessee fires its top vaccine official, and officials announce the greatest rise in inflation since 2008.

The Daily Signal - She Was Imprisoned in Her Native Cuba. Here’s How She Describes Life Under Communism.

Lala Mooney, born in communist Cuba, was imprisoned there at age 19. As protests erupt in the Caribbean nation, Mooney, mother of Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to talk about what life there is like.

"At the economic level, we lost everything," Mooney says. "My mother's family owned a sugar mill and they put a gun on my uncle's desk and say, 'Sign it over.' We lost everything."

Mooney says her father was dean of engineering at St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic University in Havana, which the communist regime of Fidel Castro confiscated in 1961, expelling American and European Anglicans who administered it.

"Once we were in prison, my father said, 'There's no sense for me to stay here if they put me in prison.'"

"Engineering was a very important topic in Cuba," Mooney adds, "because Cuba was [one of the biggest] producers of sugar in the whole world, and engineering is how you run the sugar mills."

We also cover these stories:

  • In a speech, President Joe Biden criticizes election reforms passed by Republican-controlled state legislatures.
  • Democratic state lawmakers from Texas, fleeing a vote on an election bill there, hold a press conference at the U.S. Capitol in support of congressional Democrats' legislation to impose election requirements on states.
  • So far, no Democrat has signed on to a resolution from Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, R-Fla., to support the protests in Cuba.
