Stuff They Don't Want You To Know - Gangsters of Capitalism, with Jonathan Katz

When retired Marine General Smedley Butler told Congress a group of wealthy business tycoons were scheming to overthrow the U.S. government, people weren't sure what to make of him. Over the course of his life, Butler had been called a war hero, an activist, a monster and a crackpot. What was this so-called Business Plot, and why was Butler blowing the whistle? Were any of his accusations true? In today's episode, the guys join investigative journalist Jonathan Katz, author of Gangsters of Capitalism, to learn more about Butler's life, his controversial career, and a shocking allegation of conspiracy that, if true, could have ended democracy in the United States.

Headlines From The Times - A comic and COVID walk into a cruise ship …

On New Year’s Day, comedian Jen Murphy boarded a cruise ship out of Miami and got ready to perform for 1,800 people. She never did end up getting on that comedy stage, though. Instead, she ended up getting trapped in a COVID cruise quarantine.

Today, Murphy gives us a hilarious and intense look into why she got on a cruise ship in the middle of the pandemic in the first place and what she learned from it.

Short Wave - Megadrought fuels debate over whether a flooded canyon should reemerge

In the 1960s, the Bureau of Reclamation built a dam that flooded a celebrated canyon on the Utah-Arizona border. Today, it's known as Lake Powell — the second-largest reservoir in the U.S.

A half billion dollar tourism industry has grown in the desert around the reservoir but a decades-long megadrought is putting its future in question.

With what some call America's 'lost national park' reemerging, an old debate is also resurfacing: should we restore a beloved canyon or refill a popular and critical reservoir? Environmental and American West correspondent Nathan Rott brings this story to guest host Dan Charles. Read Nate's full story and see pictures by photojournalist Claire Harbage of their recent trip to Lake Powell here.

This episode was produced by Berly McCoy, edited by Stephanie O'Neill and fact checked by Katherine Sypher. The audio engineer for this episode was Josephine Nyounai.

The Intelligence from The Economist - Twist of faith: religious hatred in India

As the country celebrates its secular constitution, we examine the rising bigotry of Hindu nationalists—at best tolerated and at worst encouraged by the ruling party. China’s propagandists are onto something: after years of dull jingoism, the entertainment they put out now is glossy, big-budget and ever more watchable. And why South-East Asia’s obsession with otters poses a threat to them.

The Best One Yet - 🕸️ “Joe Rogan vs Neil Young” — Spotify’s spiderman moment. Mark Cuban’s shark drug. Plenty’s $400M salad.

Spotify has to choose between Joe Rogan’s podcast and Neil Young’s tunes because with great publishing comes great responsibility (thanks, Uncle Ben). Mark Cuban’s new side hustle is a prescription drug company, but it’s really selling trust. And Plenty raised $400M for its vertical farmed salads because it’s serving lettuce for the year 2052, not 2022. $SPOT $WMT Got a SnackFact? American politics has been called a two-party system. While there are two major parties today, and those two parties have been around a long time, they weren’t always the only two parties.

In fact, there was a political party in the US that, took its name from a British political party, had four US presidents, and even held control of Congress for several years.

Today, however, they are all but unknown to most people.

Learn more about the Whig party, their rise, and fall, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
