In the mid 19th century while the industrial revolution was in full swing, Japan was still an agrarian, feudal society.

By the end of the 19th century, Japan had become one of the leading industrialized countries in the world.

What happened between those two points was one of the most radical social and economic transformations that any country had ever gone through.

NBN Book of the Day - Keith Kahn-Harris, “The Babel Message: A Love Letter to Language” (Icon Books, 2021)

A thrilling journey deep into the heart of language, from a rather unexpected starting point. Keith Kahn-Harris is a man obsessed with something seemingly trivial – the warning message found inside Kinder Surprise eggs:

"WARNING, read and keep: Toy not suitable for children under 3 years. Small parts might be swallowed or inhaled."

On a tiny sheet of paper, this message is translated into dozens of languages – the world boiled down to a multilingual essence. Inspired by this, the author asks: what makes 'a language'? With the help of the international community of language geeks, he shows us what the message looks like in Ancient Sumerian, Zulu, Cornish, Klingon – and many more. Along the way he considers why Hungarian writing looks angry, how to make up your own language, and the meaning of the heavy metal umlaut.

Overturning the Babel myth, he argues that the messy diversity of language shouldn't be a source of conflict, but of collective wonder. The Babel Message: A Love Letter to Language (Icon Books, 2021) is a book about hope, a love letter to language.

What A Day - Biden Looks For Mr. Voting Rights Now

Voting rights have gone back to being the White House’s top priority, but Congress is struggling to pass protections because Senate Democrats must contend with a potential Republican filibuster.

Today, the Supreme Court will hear two challenges to the White House’s vaccine mandate for private employers and healthcare facilities. The federal rule was supposed to take effect January 4 but the Occupational Safety and Health Administration decided that it would give employers until February 9th to fully enforce these rules.

And in headlines: Former health advisors to President Biden are calling for the U.S. to adopt a new COVID strategy, dozens of protestors were killed and hundreds were injured yesterday in Kazakhstan, and the FBI arrested a man who allegedly impersonated publishers to steal unpublished book manuscripts.

The Daily Signal - 3 of Biggest Issues Conservatives Face in 2022

We’re just one week into 2022 and already political debates are heating up in Washington over election integrity, the Senate filibuster, and spending, among other things.

It’s clear that 2022 will be a significant year in the fight for American liberty. Jessica Anderson, Heritage Action for America executive director, says conservatives will face at least three major battles in the year ahead.

“The fight to protect the sanctity of life, I think, is going to be in the forefront of so many voters minds, really, throughout the year,” Anderson says.

The Supreme Court’s decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case will determine not only whether or not Roe v. Wade is overturned, but also affect the lives of millions of unborn babies.

In addition to the issue of abortion, Anderson says, election integrity and President Joe Biden’s liberal agenda more broadly are significant issues to follow in 2022.

Also on today’s show:

  • Both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris deliver speeches about the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
  • Former President Donald Trump says Biden used his speech about Jan. 6 to distract from his failings as president.
  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis takes action to limit America’s dependence on China.

Opening Arguments - OA558: One Year Since 1/6 – What Merrick Garland Said (and Didn’t Say)

It's been both an eternity and no time since the disgusting attack on our nation's Capitol one year ago. We've seen some amount of justice dealt to those involved, but mostly at lower levels. Is there more to come? Will those at the top face consequences? Andrew is here reading the tea leaves on Merrick Garland's speech, and they are some interesting leaves... In the second segment, Andrew tells us about the worthless ethics report issued by Chief Justice Roberts.
