This episode is sponsored by Nexo.io.

China’s Communist Party leaders have painted themselves into a corner: they cannot be seen to put the capital into lockdown, but permitting covid to spread could be catastrophic. We look into the myriad reasons behind America’s sharp shortages of baby formula, and how to solve them. And why it is illegal for women to get a manicure in Turkmenistan.

Headlines From The Times - Tijuana’s toughest time

In this episode of the “Border City” podcast from our sister paper, the San Diego Union-Tribune, longtime U.S.-Mexico border reporter Sandra Dibble brings us to an awful time for Tijuana: the three-year window from 2008 to 2010. Cartels ramped up violence to horrifying levels, targeting cops and doctors. Police tried to purge traitors from their ranks — and went too far. But through it all, the spirit of Tijuana stayed alive. In the darkness, there were still sparkles of music and art and joy.

Time To Say Goodbye - “Everything Everywhere All At Once” deep dive

Hello from the Betaverse!

This week, we briefly touch on headline news from Asia: that a jet-lagged Biden pledged military support for Taiwan against China—a comment the State Department is now trying to walk back, lol.

Then, onto the main event: a deep-dive on the new film, Everything Everywhere All At Once, starring Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan, and Stephanie Hsu, directed by the Daniels. And yes, we spoil it!

Why did one of the hosts hate it? Were the martial arts any good? Was the ending satisfying? And is EEAAO an “Asian American” movie? All this and more in a very long, very in-depth episode.

Code Story: Insights from Startup Tech Leaders - S6 E19: Kirk Marple, Unstruk Data

Kirk Marple has been a family man for 20+ years now. His kids are older now, in their 20's, which he finds amazing. He's been in tech for most of his whole career, but when he started out professionally, he wanted to be a chef. When he was 13, he wanted to attend culinary school - but then things changed, obviously, but he still cooks often, dabbling in stir fry and barbecue.

After selling his prior company, which was heavy in the broadcast media space, Kirk ended up at General Motors. He started to learn about media data, and the value of getting the media data into computer vision algorithms. Five years later, he realized that no one had created a platform to do this yet... and he got started building it, on nights and weekends, first for podcast discovery.

This is the creation story of Unstruk Data.
