NBN Book of the Day - Alfie Bown, “Dream Lovers: The Gamification of Relationships” (Pluto Press, 2022)

We are in the middle of a 'desirevolution' - a fundamental and political transformation of the way we desire as human beings. Perhaps as always, new technologies - with their associated and inherited political biases - are organising and mapping the future. What we don’t seem to notice is that the primary way in which our lives are being transformed is through the manipulation and control of desire itself.

Our very impulses, drives and urges are 'gamified' to suit particular economic and political agendas, changing the way we relate to everything from lovers and friends to food and politicians. Digital technologies are transforming the subject at the deepest level of desire – re-mapping its libidinal economy - in ways never before imagined possible. From sexbots to smart condoms, fitbits to VR simulators and AI to dating algorithms, the 'love industries' are at the heart of the future smart city and the social fabric of everyday life.

Alfie Bown's Dream Lovers: The Gamification of Relationships (Pluto Press, 2022) considers these emergent technologies and what they mean for the future of love, desire, work and capitalism.

Rudolf Inderst is a professor of Game Design with a focus on Digital Game Studies at the IU International University of Applied Science.

What A Day - Ukraine Celebrates A Somber Independence Day

Today is Ukraine’s Independence Day, marking 31 years since it broke from the Soviet Union. It also comes six months since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, and Ukrainian officials are concerned that new strikes could come on the symbolic date.

California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation on Monday that would have allowed three California cities to open overdose prevention sites – though Newsom said during his campaign in 2018 he was “very, very open” to the harm reduction strategy.

And in headlines: prosecutors dismissed all charges against the two Atlanta police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks, a federal jury convicted two men for leading the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and a whistleblower alleged that Twitter misled regulators about how it fights hackers and spam.

The Daily Signal - ‘Deadly’: Rep. Chip Roy Issues Warning on Fentanyl Crisis

A Texas congressman is sounding the alarm over how fatal even the smallest amount of fentanyl can be as the lethal drug continues to pour into the United States.

"People don't understand how deadly fentanyl is. A sugar packet, a Sweet'N Low packet of fentanyl could kill, in its pure form, all of the people in a crowded room—say a hundred people," Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, says.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration estimates that 2 milligrams of fentanyl can kill someone depending on their size, drug usage history, and tolerance.

"You don't understand how particularly dangerous it is until you read stories about, for example, somebody who is overdosing from fentanyl, or frankly they're poisoned by fentanyl. And then someone tries to perform CPR on them. And then they go into cardiac arrest from the transitive property of having [performed] CPR," Roy, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, says.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seized about 10,600 pounds of fentanyl this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, compared to about 11,200 pounds last fiscal year, The Daily Signal reported

Roy joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the ongoing crisis on the southern border, Anthony Fauci's plans to retire this winter, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's handling of monkeypox.

Guest: Robert Downen, reporter at the Houston Chronicle.

Jules Woodson, co-Founder & COO of Help;Hear;Heal, a nonprofit providing therapy funding for survivors of sexual abuse.
