The Intelligence from The Economist - Suspension of this belief? Iran’s morality police

The enforcers of the hardliners’ mores may have been disbanded; it is hard to know if the regime is bending to protesters or sowing confusion. Either way the disquiet looks set to continue. We take a look at China’s widely watched nightly news and the narrative it hopes to promulgate. And why women are suddenly flooding into America’s funeral-services industry. Help us make the show better: take our listener survey at http://economist.com/intelligencesurvey For full access to print, digital and audio editions of The Economist, subscribe here www.economist.com/intelligenceoffer

Code Story: Insights from Startup Tech Leaders - S7 E16: Gabriel Isserlis, Tutti

Gabriel Isserlis grew up in London with an artistic background in the creative industries. His Dad is a professional cellist, which is the instrument that he chose as a young musician. As a teen, he became highly interested in making films, and decided to give it a try. He studied film in upstate New York, and realized he liked making sci-fi films about the future. Instead of films though, he decided to go make the future, and got into tech.

When Gabriel combined his technical knowledge with his experience in the creative industries, he started to see numerous opportunities to automate manual steps in these processes. He decided to set out and build these tools for people in the creative industry.

This is the creation story of Tutti.

This Machine Kills - Patreon Preview – 214. The People’s Ledger (part 2)

We continue our deep dive into a provocative, radical blueprint for democratizing finance and taking control of the economy. We detail Omarova’s detailed proposal for turning the Federal Reserve into the People’s Ledger. On the liabilities side, we discuss the universalization of deposit services (aka FedAccounts) and the elimination of private deposit-taking by commercial banks. On the assets side, we discuss the creation of a National Investment Authority which would allocate capital to socially beneficial, large-scale projects. Together this reformed Fed would drastically reduce the complexity and volatility of the financial system, while democratizing access to financial services, while also distributing the flows of capital to worthwhile investments. ••• The People's Ledger: How to Democratize Money and Finance the Economy | Saule T. NBN Book of the Day - Margret Grebowicz, “Rescue Me: On Dogs and Their Humans” (U Minnesota Press, 2022)

Margret Grebowicz's Rescue Me: On Dogs and Their Humans (U Minnesota Press, 2022) is a little book about the oldest relationship we humans have cultivated with another large animal—in something like the original interspecies space, as old or older than any other practice that might be called human. But it’s also about the role of this relationship in the attrition of life—especially social life—in late capitalism. As we become more and more obsessed with imagining ourselves as benevolent rescuers of dogs, it is increasingly clear that it is dogs who are rescuing us. But from what? And toward what? Exploring adoption, work, food, and training, this book considers the social as fundamentally more-than-human and argues that the future belongs to dogs—and the humans they are pulling along.

What A Day - Revisiting The Ongoing Red Hill Water Crisis in O’ahu

Today is election day in Georgia’s Senate runoff. Voters are headed to the polls to decide between Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker, in a race that could give Democrats an outright majority in the Senate.

This Wednesday marks one year since the state of Hawai’i ordered the U.S. Navy to defuel its Red Hill fuel facility, after thousands of gallons of jet fuel contaminated the local water supply. Keoni DeFranco, an O’ahu-based community organizer, joins us to discuss the ongoing fight to shut down the facility for good.

And in headlines: the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that could undercut LGBTQ rights, authorities said a “targeted” attack on power substations over the weekend left thousands of people in North Carolina without electricity, and Michael Avenatti was sentenced to 14 years in prison for embezzlement.
