NBN Book of the Day - Pete Millwood, “Improbable Diplomats: How Ping-Pong Players, Musicians, and Scientists Remade US-China Relations” (Cambridge UP, 2022)

In 1971, Americans made two historic visits to China that would transform relations between the two countries. One was by US official Henry Kissinger; the other, earlier, visit was by the US table tennis team. Historians have mulled over the transcripts of Kissinger's negotiations with Chinese leaders. However, they have overlooked how, alongside these diplomatic talks, a rich program of travel and exchange had begun with ping-pong diplomacy.

Improbable Diplomats: How Ping-Pong Players, Musicians, and Scientists Remade US-China Relations (Cambridge UP, 2022) reveals how a diverse cast of Chinese and Americans – athletes and physicists, performing artists and seismologists – played a critical, but to date overlooked, role in remaking US-China relations. Based on new sources from more than a dozen archives in China and the United States, Pete Millwood argues that the significance of cultural and scientific exchanges went beyond reacquainting the Chinese and American people after two decades of minimal contact; exchanges also powerfully influenced Sino-American diplomatic relations and helped transform post-Mao China.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | How the Woke Agenda Unleashed Havoc in the Classroom, Teacher Daniel Buck Explains

Children are always going to misbehave, teacher Daniel Buck says, and that’s why discipline is needed in the classroom.

"I think the idea that we're going to solve misbehavior is kind of Utopian," Buck says, adding that is "what the progressive idea is."

"If we just get the system right, then kids are going to behave. And that's never going to happen," he says. Instead, Buck advocates for a strong disciplinary "system in place that anticipates and responds to misbehavior."

The lack of such discipline in the classroom is leading some teachers to resign and harming students' ability to learn, says Buck, the author of “What Is Wrong With Our Schools?: The Ideology Impoverishing Education in America and How We Can Do Better for Our Students." The book was published in December.

Buck joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain how the agenda of the woke Left has led to a lack of discipline in American classrooms, and why a restoration of discipline would improve learning outcomes for students.

Slate Books - How To!: 4000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals

Joey is a young creative living in Australia who can’t decide which hat to wear. Should it be songwriting, skateboarding, acting, or should he focus more on his day job as a retail clerk? Fitting everything in during the week seems impossible and he feels guilty when he can’t cross everything off his checklist. On this episode of How To!, co-host Amanda Ripley brings in journalist Oliver Burkeman, the author of 4000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals. He explains how he too once wanted to do it all, but eventually realized that it’s just not feasible. As Joey learns, letting go of some things and focusing on what really matters can actually lead to the ‘joy of missing out.’
