Everything Everywhere Daily - The Aral Sea

At the start of the 20th century, the world’s third-largest lake was located in Central Asia. It had been known to the people of the Asian steppes for thousands of years. 

However, by the end of the 20th century, the lake had all but disappeared. 

Somehow, over the course of a century, one of the world’s largest bodies of fresh water had all but vanished, stranding the many ships which once sailed the lake.

NBN Book of the Day - Beth Bailey, “An Army Afire: How the US Army Confronted Its Racial Crisis in the Vietnam Era” (UNC Press, 2023)

By the Tet Offensive in early 1968, what had been widely heralded as the best qualified, best-trained army in US history was descending into crisis as the Vietnam War raged without end. Morale was tanking. AWOL rates were rising. And in August of that year, a group of Black soldiers seized control of the infamous Long Binh Jail, burned buildings, and beat a white inmate to death with a shovel. The days of "same mud, same blood" were over, and by the end of the decade, a new generation of Black GIs had decisively rejected the slights and institutional racism their forefathers had endured. 

In An Army Afire: How the US Army Confronted Its Racial Crisis in the Vietnam Era (UNC Press, 2023), acclaimed military historian Beth Bailey shows how the Army experienced, defined, and tried to solve racism and racial tension (in its own words, "the problem of race") in the Vietnam War era. Some individuals were sympathetic to the problem but offered solutions that were more performative than transformational, while others proposed remedies that were antithetical to the army's fundamental principles of discipline, order, hierarchy, and authority. Bailey traces a frustrating yet fascinating arc where the army initially rushed to create solutions without taking the time to fully identify the origins, causes, and proliferation of racial tension. It was a difficult, messy process, but only after Army leaders ceased viewing the issue as a Black issue and accepted their own roles in contributing to the problem did change become possible.

What A Day - All Tuckered Out

In a series of high-profile cable news firings Monday morning, Fox News announced that the network agreed to part ways with top host Tucker Carlson — and just minutes later, news broke that CNN terminated longtime anchor Don Lemon after 17 years with the network. 

President Biden is expected to announce his 2024 bid for re-election as soon as today. Multiple outlets reported that he tapped White House Senior Adviser Julia Chavez Rodriguez as his campaign manager, signaling that he’s already gearing up to make his case for a second term. 

And in headlines: North Dakota’s Republican governor signed legislation banning abortions after six weeks, demonstrators gathered at Montana’s Capitol to protest the censure of Rep. Zooey Zephyr, and more celebrities came out to say they did not sign up for Twitter Blue.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | Rep. Dan Bishop Sounds Off on Hunter Biden Laptop Cover-Up Revelation

Michael Morell, former deputy director of the CIA, testified that Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who at the time was a senior adviser to the Biden campaign, "played a role in the inception" of the Oct. 19, 2020, letter from 51 former intelligence officials suggesting that "the Hunter Biden laptop was part of a Russian disinformation campaign," Fox News reported.

"It was requested by Antony Blinken, who was working for the Biden campaign, and they were too pleased to do it. So, Michael Morell went out and carried on the effort, and 51 intel agents, or former intel policymakers, were in on it," Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C., says. "And of course they hedged their language there, but they gave rise into the media coverage, which was, it was 'Russian disinformation.’"

"It took way past the election, and year and a half or whatever, for media outlets ultimately to acknowledge what it was," the North Carolina lawmaker says. 

The October letter was co-signed by more than four dozen former intelligence officials, among them Jim Clapper, former director of national intelligence; Leon Panetta and John Brennan, former directors of the CIA; Rick Ledgett, former deputy director of the National Security Agency; and Morell.

"What happens now? Well, there are a couple other details there that are of considerable interest to the committee that we're still pursuing. I'll keep those under my hat for the moment," Bishop says.
