Hayek Program Podcast - Best of the Podcast! — Israel Kirzner on the Revival of Austrian Economics

On this episode of the Hayek Program Podcast, we revisit a keynote lecture given by Israel Kirzner on the revival of Austrian economics. In 2014, the Mercatus F. A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics hosted a keynote speech and panel discussion by some of Friedrich Hayek’s most prominent colleagues and interlocutors to reflect on the significance of Hayek’s Nobel Prize and the various strands of influence his work has had in subsequent decades of scholarship.

In this installment of the series, Distinguished New York University Professor Emeritus Israel M. Kirzner delivers the keynote address on the revival of Austrian economics, focusing specifically on the history of Austrian economics and how Hayek's Nobel Prize paved the way for this revival.

This Machine Kills - 264. Every Dealership a Fiefdom, Every Middleman a Lord (ft. Alex Sammon)

We are joined by Alex Sammon – politics reporter at Slate – to discuss one of the best pieces of gonzo reporting in recent memory. Alex journeyed into the heart of darkness at the center of American capitalism: the National Automobile Dealers Association. We discuss why a critical analysis of car dealers is necessary for understanding the real composition of class power and wealth in society. The politics of how car dealerships became a network of deeply entrenched fiefdoms with the power of king makers is absolutely stunning. Plus, we talk about the debauchery and decadence on display at the NADA conference. ••• Alex’s car dealers article: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/05/rich-republicans-party-car-dealers-2024-desantis.html ••• Alex’s Trump streamers article: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/06/trump-miami-courthouse-indictment-desantis.html ••• Alex’s twitter: https://twitter.com/alex_sammon ••• American Gentry | Patrick Wyman https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/09/trump-american-gentry-wyman-elites/620151/ Subscribe to hear more analysis and commentary in our premium episodes every week! https://www.patreon.com/thismachinekills Hosted by Jathan Sadowski (www.twitter.com/jathansadowski) and Edward Ongweso Jr. (www.twitter.com/bigblackjacobin). The Gist - Small Person Buries Bones, Scratches Wall, Changes History

Homo Naledi is an extinct species of hominin discovered by a team led by Lee Berger. If Berger is right, Naledi's actions predate a few of the traits we had assumed to be uniquely Homo Sapien. Plus, Donald Trump crinkles paper on tape. And the signs of Generalized Epistemic Degradation.

In deciding against the bonkers (technical legal term) “Independent State Legislature Theory” in Moore v Harper, the Supreme Court chose not to take a wrecking ball to American democracy. Judge Michael Luttig, a counsel of record in the case, is relieved but not surprised. In this emergency episode of Amicus, Judge Luttig tells Dahlia Lithwick that Tuesday’s decision may have big repercussions at the Department of Justice, in Jack Smith’s investigation of former President Trump’s role in January 6th.

Strict Scrutiny - Is ISL dead? IDK.

The Supreme Court handed down its decision in Moore v. Harper today, saying that state legislatures can’t actually make up whatever rules they want around federal elections, without oversight from anyone. But is this a victory for our democracy, or should we still be freaked out? Kate, Leah, and Melissa break down the opinion and the questions it leaves open.

We'll be around all week pushing out emergency episodes as the Supreme Court continues to do... whatever it does. Be sure to subscribe in your podcast app of choice so you don't miss it!
