NBN Book of the Day - Erik J. Dahl, “The COVID-19 Intelligence Failure: Why Warning Was Not Enough” (Georgetown UP, 2023)

Epidemiologists and national security agencies warned for years about the potential for a deadly pandemic, but in the end global surveillance and warning systems were not enough to avert the COVID-19 disaster. In The COVID-19 Intelligence Failure: Why Warning Was Not Enough (Georgetown UP, 2023), Erik J. Dahl demonstrates that understanding how intelligence warnings work--and how they fail--shows why the years of predictions were not enough.

In the first in-depth analysis of the topic, Dahl examines the roles that both traditional intelligence services and medical intelligence and surveillance systems play in providing advance warning against public health threats--and how these systems must be improved for the future. For intelligence to effectively mitigate threats, specific, tactical-level warnings must be collected and shared in real time with receptive decision makers who will take appropriate action. Dahl shows how a combination of late and insufficient warnings about COVID-19, the Trump administration's political aversion to scientific advice, and decentralized public health systems all exacerbated the pandemic in the United States. Dahl's analysis draws parallels to other warning failures that preceded major catastrophes from Pearl Harbor to 9/11, placing current events in context.

The COVID-19 Intelligence Failure is a wake-up call for the United States and the international community to improve their national security, medical, and public health intelligence systems and capabilities.

What A Day - We Won’t Build This City

Hundreds of people crowded Atlanta’s City Hall yesterday to give public comment ahead of a city council vote over the proposed police training facility that activists call “Cop City.” The vote would decide whether or not to allocate $31 million in public funds to help build the facility, which has drawn widespread opposition.

Another group of Latin American migrants arrived in Sacramento on a chartered jet Monday morning – the second flight of migrants to land at the state’s capital in the past three days. While no one has publicly taken responsibility, California officials believe Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is behind the unannounced flights.

And in headlines: military officials have an explanation for the sonic boom heard across the Washington, D.C. area over the weekend, hundreds of journalists working for the largest newspaper chain in the country walked off the job, and Spotify announced a new round of layoffs.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | Pyramid of Far-Right Radicalization, Explained


The Biden administration is using a Department of Homeland Security anti-terrorism grant program to target Americans with conservative and Christian beliefs. It's a shocking discovery that came to light in recent weeks thanks to the Media Research Center.


The Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant Program provided $352,000 to the PREVENTS-OH initiative at the University of Dayton. Included in the grant application was a chart, "The Pyramid of Far-Right Radicalization," which links well-known conservative organizations to neo-Nazis.


Dan Schneider, vice president of the Media Research Center's Free Speech America, MRC Business, and the external affairs division, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain what his organization discovered.


"They held a conference even before grant funding was provided, where they specifically used this chart and additional charts to train people on how to subvert organizations like The Heritage Foundation," Schneider said. "And this sounds like such a conspiracy theory. It sounds crazy that this is happening, but it really is."
