Code Story: Insights from Startup Tech Leaders - S8 E26: Josh Purvis, Assembly

Josh Purvis grew up in Missouri, on a lake in the Ozarks. He spent most of his time outdoors, and became a professional wakeboarder. Eventually, an injury took him out of the circuit and he went to entertainment school. During his time there, he and his roommate built a website - and he has been into tech ever since. Outside of tech, he reads a ton, owning about 400-500 books, and enjoys street tacos, wings, and a good plate of pasta.

In the past, Josh and his current co-founder started to discuss employment engagement. They also noticed that sharing information across a large company was, well - inefficient, with many points of failure. On the side, they started building something that would improve both of these areas together.

This is the creation story of Assembly.

Take This Pod and Shove It - Pop Goes the Country Artist, with Danii Gallegos

It's a tale as old as time (or at least as old as the 1970's): a country artist garners enough crossover appeal that they make the deliberate switch to Pop Music. Some artists return to their roots, some fizzle out, and others become the biggest touring acts on the planet. This week we are joined by comedy producer Danii Gallegos (We Still Like You) to discuss the Marren Morris's controversial statement on why she's leaving country to join forces with Jack Antonoff, plus who else has successfully left country for greener (more lucrative) pastures.

NBN Book of the Day - Christopher M. Bellitto, “Humility: The Secret History of a Lost Virtue” (Georgetown UP, 2023)

This cultural history of humility reveals this lost virtue as a secret defense against arrogance and incivility.

History demonstrates that when the virtue of humility is cast aside, excessive individualism follows. A person who lacks humility is at risk of developing a deceptive sense of certitude and at worst denies basic human rights, respect, and dignity to anyone they identify as the enemy.

Christopher M. Bellitto's Humility: The Secret History of a Lost Virtue (Georgetown UP, 2023), a cultural history and biography of the idea of humility, argues that the frightening alternative to humility has been the death of civility. In this book, Bellitto explores humility in Greco-Roman history, philosophy, and literature; in the ancient and medieval Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptures and sermons; in the Enlightenment; and in contemporary discussions of education in virtue and citizenship. The author encourages readers to recover and reclaim this lost virtue by developing a new perspective on humility as an alternative to the diseases of hubris, arrogance, and narcissism in society.

This book offers a fresh perspective on this lost virtue for readers interested in finding a path to renewed civility.

Adrian Guiu holds a PhD in History of Christianity from the University of Chicago and teaches at Wright College in Chicago.

What A Day - Israel Declares War on Hamas

At least 1,500 people have been killed in the days since Hamas, the Palestinian armed group that controls Gaza, launched a surprise attack against Israel. Israel has since declared war, and vowed to launch a "total" siege on Gaza. Meanwhile, the U.S. and other global powers are working to stop it from becoming a conflict with multiple fronts.

Parts of West Maui reopened to tourists this weekend for the first time since this summer's deadly wildfires were extinguished. State officials maintain that allowing visitors to return to the area is necessary for the island's economic recovery. But many residents, including those from the town of Lahaina, say their community isn't ready.
