Cato Daily Podcast - Congress’s Proposed Effective Ban on TikTok Advances

t's an immensely popular social media app, but if a proposed new law goes into effect, TikTok would face a nationwide ban in the U.S. if the app isn't divested from Beijing-based ByteDance. It raises questions for both the free speech rights of producers and users, and the property rights of company owners. Cato's Jennifer Huddleston and Paul Matzko comment.

The Gist - Terrible Leaders And Horrible Followers

We talk to Barbara Kellerman, author of Leadership from Bad to Worse: What Happens When Bad Festers. She argues that you can't blame Adam Neumann for all of We Works crash, just as not all of Xi Jinging's excesses are on Xi. Plus, recently resigned Special Counsel Robert Hur testifies before Congress. He does pretty well.  Few others on the Judiciary can say the same.

Reset with Sasha-Ann Simons - The Medical Limbo Of ‘Prior Authorization’

Your doctor says you need this treatment. But your insurance company says they don’t agree. Your pharmacist receives your prescription, but won’t fill it until your insurance provider greenlights it. This back-and-forth is called “prior authorization” and it’s how your health insurance company determines what medicines they will or will not cover. It also creates lengthy wait times for patients who need the medicine immediately – if they’re able to get it at all. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker recently announced he’ll introduce a bill to stop what he called “predatory insurance practices.” Reset learns more about how this impacts patients and health care providers from UChicago Harris School of Public Policy assistant professor Zarek Brot-Goldberg and Reset listener Jackie Covarrubias, who says her father’s chemotherapy medication often gets denied by his insurance. Lost Debate - TikTok Ban, Woke AI, Blue City Backtrack, Falling Standards

Will Congress ban TikTok? Ravi and guest co-host Stephen Kent explore the platform’s data practices, censorship, and why its China-based parent company, ByteDance, could pose national security risks.

They then examine Google AI’s “Gemini,” and how recent critiques of the tool’s biased portrayals of historical figures exemplify the challenges tech companies face in curbing AI-driven bias and misinformation.

A comprehensive new report from The Economist shows American high school standards are on the decline. They discuss its effects on kids across the country and what sensible schooling solutions could look like.
