More or Less: Behind the Stats - Do fossil fuels get $7 trillion in subsidies?

Governments around the world have promised to fight climate change. But are they also pumping an absolutely massive amount of money into subsidies for fossil fuels? In 2022, an IMF working paper estimated that global subsidies for fossil fuels totalled $7 trillion. But when you dig into that research, you find that this number might not mean what you think it does. We explain how they reached that conclusion, with the help of Angela Picciariello from the International Institute for Sustainable Development, and Nate Vernon, one of the co-authors of the IMF paper.

Planet Money - Title Pirates

A couple years ago, Gina Leto, a real estate developer, bought a property with her business partner. The process went like it usually did: Lots of paperwork; a virtual closing. Pretty cut-and-dry. Gina and her partner started building a house on the property.

But $800,000 into the construction process, Gina got a troubling call from her lawyer. There was something wrong. At first, Gina thought the house had burned down. It turned out that the situation was... maybe worse.

On today's show: Buying land seems pretty secure, right? There's so much paperwork and verification along the way. But a messy system of how titles are sold, transferred and documented makes a perfect entry point for a new kind of criminal: Title Pirates.

Former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz announced Thursday he is withdrawing from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump's pick for attorney general. And the Senate isn't paving the way for Trump to fill his administration with loyalists.

Reporting indicates New York prosecutors are open to the possibility of pushing Trump's sentencing in his hush money case to 2029 when his second term in the White House will end.

Meanwhile this week marked 1,000 days since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This week the Biden administration made a two major U-turns on Ukraine's military aid policy – allowing missiles to be used in Russia territory and a decision to supply Zelenskyy with landmines. Both decisions that have put pressure on the European Union.

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a new nuclear doctrine that lowered his bar for using nuclear weapons.

The Daily Signal - Praise for Pam Bondi, Another Trump Legal Win, Eliminating the Education Department | Nov. 22

Today's top news:

Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general and prosecutor for nearly 20 years, is Trump’s new pick for U.S. attorney general. Trump specifically hailed Bondi as a force against the weaponization of the federal government against conservatives.

Trump scored a “decisive win” today in a New York courtroom. Judge Juan Merchan won’t hold a sentencing hearing next week as planned. Instead, today the embattled judge granted the Trump legal team’s request to file a motion to dismiss the case.

Senator Mike Rounds, a Republican from South Dakota, introduced a bill that would eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. It’s called the Returning Education to Our States Act, and it could serve as the legislative vehicle to carry out Trump’s promise.
