This Machine Kills - Patreon Preview – 395. How Workers are Building Power (ft. Eric Blanc)

We chat with Eric Blanc — author of the new book We Are the Union: How Worker-to-Worker Organizing Is Revitalizing Labor and Winning Big — about how the model of labor organizing through grassroots, horizontal movements is taking off in a huge way. This growing model of worker-to-worker organizing is challenging the conventional model of large, hierarchical unions. By enrolling millions of new workers into the labor movement, worker-to-worker organizing is building a stronger base for greater victories with long-lasting impact. Effective labor organizing is crucial for advancing social equality and democratic power—and our models of organizing should embody those values. ••• We Are the Union | Eric Blanc https://www.ucpress.edu/books/we-are-the-union ••• Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee https://workerorganizing.org/ ••• Save Our Public Services https://actionnetwork.org/forms/thank-you-for-taking-action-stay-in-the-fight/ Standing Plugs: ••• Order Jathan’s new book: https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520398078/the-mechanic-and-the-luddite ••• Subscribe to Ed’s substack: https://substack.com/@thetechbubble ••• Subscribe to TMK on patreon for premium episodes: https://www.patreon.com/thismachinekills Hosted by Jathan Sadowski (bsky.app/profile/jathansadowski.com) and Edward Ongweso Jr. (www.x.com/bigblackjacobin). Chapo Trap House - 911 – Red Dawn feat. Radio War Nerd (2/24/25)

We’re joined by Mark Ames & John Dolan of Radio War Nerd to discuss what may be the wind-down of the war in Ukraine. We look at the political ramifications both domestically and internationally, how the west & Russia have fared militarily, and the lives of the Ukrainians affected by the conflict. Plus, would you believe fighter aircraft, MMA, and a drive-by slagging of union general loser George McClellan all get mentions in this? Consider This from NPR - Trump’s tariffs and rhetoric strain historic Windsor-Detroit friendship

President Donald Trump's tariffs and comments about turning Canada into the 51st state have tested U.S. relations with the country. One example is the deterioration of longstanding bonds between Detroit, Michigan and its neighbor across the river, Windsor, Ontario.

NPR's Don Gonyea is a Detroit native and current resident of the city. He's had a front row view to changing attitudes between the two populations who have long enjoyed a very friendly, symbiotic relationship.

The Daily Signal - Relentless Lawfare: Ted Cruz and Rick Scott Break Down the Lawsuits Blocking Trump Policies

The Daily Signal’s Tyler O’Neil sat down with Senators Ted Cruz and Rick Scott to talk about the torrent of lawsuits the Trump administration faces, and what to do about them. Scott, a former Florida governor, faced similar lawsuits. Cruz, a former Supreme Court clerk and solicitor general of Texas, broke down the legal options Trump has, and why he thinks the Left’s lawfare will be relentless but ultimately fail.

Everything Everywhere Daily - The Tensho Embassy (Encore)

In 1582, a Japanese nobleman by the name of Lord Otomo Sorin sent a group of envoys to Europe.

The entire round trip of their journey took eight years, and along the way, they visited several European countries and met multiple European heads of state, including two popes.

It was hoped that their mission would revolutionize relations between Europe and Japan.

Learn more about the Tensho Embassy and the first Japanese mission to Europe on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

NBN Book of the Day - Benjamin Heber Johnson, “Texas: An American History” (Yale UP, 2025)

There's more to Texas than hats, oil, and BBQ, writes Benjamin Johnson in his sweeping new synthesis, Texas: An American History (Yale UP: 2025) - though, those all matter too. The state's reach has traveled globally, Johnson argues, influencing everything from how people around the world eat, to how they pray, to the music they listen to. In his new book, Johnson describes the long history of the Lone Star State, from its thousands of years of Indigenous habitation up through the present day. Along the way, he makes some surprising detours, including explaining how Indigenous Texas was anything but a backwater to Mesoamerica, and demonstrating the long progressive legacy in a state known today for its ardent conservatism. Texas is a book as big as its topic, trekking through centuries of history via noteworthy anecdotes which provide a window into a place that defies stereotypes.
