The tech has gotten so good that it's nearly undetectable, and the temptation to cheat on at-home essays is making many teachers consider whether all essay writing should happen in class. But the trade-offs are obvious: Should limited class time be taken up by in-class essays? Is the pedological benefit of at-home essays worth losing dynamic, Socratic in-class learning? What are we trying to teach kids with longform writing assignments anyway? Should we lean in to technological help in writing the way we've all become accustomed to spellcheck?
