Harvard Law & Economics Professor (and Briahna's favorite teacher) Jon Hanson joins Bad Faith to offer a firsthand lesson on the legal theories, economic principles, and social psychology that explain how our legal system and our democracy became so corrupted. In a sweeping conversation, Hanson explains how low liability standards all but ensure disasters like the East Palestine derailment occur, and what could be done to change that reality. As Briahna has mentioned on the podcast time and time again, Professor Hanson's Corporate Law & Tort Law classes were formative moments in her political evolution. She's thrilled to share some of those lessons on today's pod. She paid 180k for law school so you could get these lessons for free.

Briahna enlists the help of Nathan J. Robinson, Editor-in-Chief of Current Affairs and author of the new book Responding to the Right: Brief Replies to 25 Conservative Arguments to push back against common right-leaning arguments that have emerged in the wake of the East Palestine train derailment and other current events. Is regulators' failures proof that government is corrupt and we're better off without it? Also, should AOC debate Majorie Taylor Greene, and if so, how would Nathan prep her? Should Briahna debate Ben Shaprio? And if yes, what would hep her reach the best result for the left? Also, what's the libertarian socialist take on covid vaccines?

Briahna got tons of feed back on the Richard Wolff episode about the debt ceiling debate from Modern Monetary Theory heads who objected to Wolff treating the US economy like a household budget. So Briahna asked the foremost MMT economist & author of "The Deficit Myth," Professor Stephanie Kelton, on to explain what the left's approach to the debt ceiling discourse should be in her view. Also, Professor Kelton, who advised Senator Sanders in 2020, talks about her frustration with Bernie's reliance on "pay for" rhetoric, and argues that the left can't avoid teaching the public about MMT forever.

Briahna speaks to Kamau Franklin, founder of Community Movement Builders and a long-time organizer/attorney/writer in Atlanta who has been working against Cop City and around policing broadly, and Matthew Clair, a Stanford professor of sociology with a focus on how race and class inequalities in the criminal legal system are embedded in and reproduced through the attorney-client relationship. The panel discusses the proposed cop training development known as Cop City, the recent murder of Cop City protester Manuel "Tortuguita" Páez Terán by the police, the murder of Tyre Nichols and debates over whether "racism" could have played a role in the killing of a black man by black police officers. The panel then debated the utility of framing criminal justice reform as a "black" issue, the failures of the Biden administration's criminal justice efforts, and the role black mayors play in affirming the status quo.

Professor and iconoclast Norman Finkelstein's long-awaited book is finally out! He and Briahna discuss chapters on Ta-Nehisi Coates & Kimberlé Crenshaw in the wake of news that those authors and others have been omitted from the African American AP curriculum. Does the cancel culture critic have a defense of these figures being canceled despite his substantive agreement with them? Also, what does Norman, a staunch advocate of Palestinian rights, make of Ilhan Omar's ejection from the Foreign Affairs committee? The critic of identity politics weighs in on the choice to defend Ilhan as "a black woman." Finally, Norman gives his takes on the Bernie movement, the future of electoralism, and everyone's favorite topic -- Marianne 2024.

Briahna interviews Marxist economist Richard Wolff about the debt ceiling negotiations that started this week and the progressive solutions to the debt crisis that are never put on the table, including taxing the rich, cutting the military budget, and minting the coin. The conversation eventually turns toward the subject preoccupying the left: the future of the left, Marianne 2024, and the leadership void left by Bernie Sanders. Is there hope for a "Draft X" movement? Who is Wolff's dream candidate?

Part two of last week's conversation with popular Twitch streamer Vaush is here. During the first half, we have some really promising simpatico about doomerism on the left, before we get derailed in the FTV quagmire again. Is Brie right to want some accountability from left media figures who thwarted one of the few opportunities for the left to leverage real power over the last few years? Or is there a good faith reason to want to let it go?

After Briahna and Vaush met on the set of Rising last week, Briahna decided to reach out to Vaush and invite him to discuss a number of critiques he's leveled against her over the years. The two have a substantially good faith -- if at times fiery -- conversation about whether Briahna enables fascists by acknowledging when conservatives occasionally have a good point, the merits of Marjorie Taylor Greene's push to abolish the FBI, Vaush's defense of "vote blue no matter who" as a strategy, and more. This is part one of a three hour interview. Part two, largely focusing on Force the Vote, will air on Monday at patreon.com/badfaithpodcast. Don't miss it.

No prevaricating. No doomsdaying. No punting to abstractions. Kshama Sawant also explains why she's leaving the Seattle City Council after a decade.
