Martin Luther King Jr. and Frederick Douglass were both dedicated to bringing about an America that was colorblind, Andre Archie says, but their work is being undermined. 

“When I say colorblind, it's not naive at all,” says Archie, an author and professor at Colorado State University. “It speaks to a tradition that we find with MLK, with Frederick Douglass, with the Founders, right, in principle. We also find it in the Western philosophical tradition; so, my goal is to rehabilitate that.”

 

In his new book, “The Virtue of Color-Blindness,” Archie explains how what he calls the “cult” of diversity, equity and inclusion has harmed society and is contrary to the vision of America’s greatest civil rights leaders, and what can be done about it. 

Archie joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the role conservatives must play in restoring a vision of a colorblind America.

The climate is changing, but is the change cause for concern? 

“There are natural climate cycles, which are normal,” research scientist Roy Spencer says, adding that “If you move beyond the temperature to things like storminess, you know, hurricane activity, there have been no demonstrable, long-term changes in anything other than a modest, relatively benign increase in temperature."

When it comes to climate change, Spencer, a meteorologist and research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, says he's “been hearing the rhetoric and the fearmongering since the 1970s.”

Asked if he personally worries about climate change, Spencer says: “No, if I was seriously worried about it, you know, I'd be worried for my children's future and my grandchildren's future. And I'm not.” 

“I'm more worried about what our government is doing on a number of fronts, including regulatory mandates, which is going to make life much more expensive for them and therefore reduce their standard of living,” adds Spencer, who has researched climate change for 40 years. 

The “natural fluctuations in weather are normal,” argues Spencer, currently a visiting fellow in The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.)

The scientific community doesn't all agree on the core causes of climate change, and according to climate expert Willie Soon, humanity should look beyond Earth to find the source.

The Earth’s rotation around the sun affects the planet’s temperature, says Soon, a visiting fellow on the Science Advisory Committee of the Center for Energy, Climate and Environment at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) 

Glaciers, for example, “melted away because the sun started to get … brighter and provided more solar energy to the climate system,” according to Soon. 

Throughout his career, Soon, a former researcher with the Center for Astrophysics-Harvard & Smithsonian, says he has sought to pursue the facts surrounding shifts in the climate because "science is not about belief."

"Science is about data," he said. 

Many people think that it is “rising carbon dioxide that is the main factor … that affects climate change, and that is wholly untrue,” Soon says. “That is such a distorted view that I think it needs to be corrected.” 

Soon joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” for part two of a three-part series discussing climate change. In part one, expert David Legates explained the history of climate change. 

On today’s show, Soon explains why he thinks the sun is the source of the changing climate and how the sun affects the Earth’s cycles of warming and cooling.

Climate change has strayed from being a scientific conversation to a hot-button political debate. But what are the facts surrounding climate change? Is climate change real? And if it is, what is causing the climate to change? Do we need to live in fear of climate change?

In a three-part "Daily Signal Podcast" series, experts in the fields of climate and meteorology join the show to explain the history of climate change, its root causes and the appropriate response to it. 

Here in episode one, David Legates—a visiting fellow with the Science Advisory Committee in the Center for Energy, Climate and Environment at The Heritage Foundation and a former director of the Center for Climatic Research at the University of Delaware, explains the history of climate change. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)

According to Legates, “the climate is changing because it always has changed, and it always will change.” 

“We've gone through periods of lots of tornadoes, for example, and then a period where we have almost none,” Legates says. “We've gone through periods where we have lots of hurricanes. We have floods, we have droughts. We go through periodic cycles. So, the climate is sort of the backdrop on which weather plays its randomness, if you want. So, climate does change, always has changed, and as far as I'm concerned, always will change.”

Legates goes on to explain what is known about climate change through the ages and the similarities between climate change patterns today and those seen in the past.

The House will be back in session on Jan. 9, and the new leader of the House Freedom Caucus says border security will be a top priority when they return. 

“Of the many crises that this president and these Democrats have created that the country is suffering under now,” says Rep. Bob Good, the newly elected chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, “the border … may be the greatest issue, the greatest crises of all.” 

The Freedom Caucus represents the most conservative faction of Republicans in the House of Representatives, and Good, R-Va., assumed the position of chairman at the start of the new year, succeeding Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa. 

Good joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the top priorities for the House Freedom Caucus in 2024, and what kind of pressure he and the caucus are prepared to use to force action on border security. 

“I think it's a position of merit to say, again, the border is our greatest crisis,” Good said. “Irreparable harm has been done, is being done by this president, and at some point, the House should exercise its power of the purse and say 'no more.'”

Baroness Caroline Cox has a long history of service in public office, but her passion for justice has led her not only to Great Britain’s House of Lords but to war-torn, poverty-stricken nations around the world. 

“The mission is to work for people who are suffering oppression and persecution in areas which are largely unreached by the major aid organizations like the [United Nations],” Cox says of the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust, which she leads.

Cox, who joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast,” says her organization intentionally goes where others can’t because the U.N., for example, “can only go places with permission of a sovereign government.” 

The work is “risky” but also a “privilege,” says Cox, who is an independent member of the House of Lords who served as deputy speaker there from 1985 to 2005.

“The majority we work with happen to be Christians because Christians are suffering a lot of persecution around the world today,” Cox says.

The Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust also works with Muslims who are suffering in Sudan’s Blue Nile State, as well as with Buddhists in Myanmar (formerly Burma), she notes. 

On the podcast, Cox also talks about her fight for the rights of Muslim women who are forced to live under Sharia law in the United Kingdom, as well as her advocacy work for persecuted religious groups across the globe. She also describes the response in the U.K. to the Israel-Hamas war.
