Xi Van Fleet, who lived under the bloody communist rule of Chinese leader Mao Zedong, says the goal of her new book "is to lay out the parallels of the two Cultural Revolutions that I experienced—[the one] 50 years ago and the one I experience with millions of Americans right now, the woke revolution."

"And I've tried to lay out the parallels, to let people see that 'woke' is nothing new. It happened before," says Van Fleet, author of the book "Mao's America: A Survivor's Warning." "What's going on in America is history repeating."

Mao, who wrested control of what became the People's Republic of China in 1949, imposed his violent Cultural Revolution from 1966 until his death in 1976.

"People like me, people [who] lived through the Cultural Revolution, we see through it right away. We know it is the same thing," Van Fleet says.

Van Fleet joins this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss what it was like growing up in communist China under Mao, her No. 1 takeaway for those who read her book, and an excerpt published by The Daily Caller.

No Angel Studios‘ film makes it to the big screen without the approval of the Angel Guild. 

There are more than “21 films a week submitted into the Angel Guild and then the Guild goes through those and they’re picking their favorites and they’re greenlighting them and then Angel Studios can only pick from the list that they greenlight,” Jeff Harmon, chief content officer for Angel Studios, says. 

Movies like “Sound of Freedom” and “After Death” received enthusiastic support from the Angel Guild and in turn premiered on the big screen, but for every approved film there are hundreds more than the Guild “fails.” 

Anyone can sign up to be a member of the Angel Guild and play a role in deciding what content Angel’s Studios should send to theaters. Jeff and Neal Harmon, CEO of Angel Studios, join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how to join the Angel’s Guild, and to share about the latest Angel Studio’s movies and shows. 

On Dec. 1, “The Shift,” a sci-fi romance depicting the story of Job from the Bible, premiers in theaters. In 2024, Angel Studios will release titles such as “Bonhoeffer” and “Cabrini.”

Are you planning to talk politics at Thanksgiving dinner this year?

Depending on your family’s dynamics, it can be fraught with danger. But filmmaker Rob Feld, director of a new documentary called “Jesters and Fools,” says there’s a way to navigate such conversations without resorting to creating acrimony.

“I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving with loved ones,” Feld tells The Daily Signal. “Don’t be afraid to talk about things, but there are good ways to talk about things. And it’s by asking questions of each other and not trying to repress that desire we all have to just attack.”

Feld’s film, “Jesters and Fools,” challenges the popular media narrative that we are hopelessly divided as Americans. He recruited popular comedians like Colin Quinn, Jim Norton, and Rosebud Baker to tell the story.

A couple of years ago, former Vice President Mike Pence says a good friend of his said he was curious how Pence managed to have a wonderful family while also maintaining a demanding political career. That conversation became the genesis for Pence’s new book, "Go Home for Dinner: Advice on How Faith Makes a Family and Family Makes a Life." 

The book, which Pence co-authored with his daughter, Charlotte Pence Bond, describes what life was like for the Pence children as they grew up, and how their father lived out his commitment to his family. 

“I've never had to be motivated to work hard,” Pence said during an interview on “The Daily Signal Podcast.”

“I am always motivated to try and make a difference in the world for the values that I believe in," Pence says. "But as we recount in this book, I really do believe that for men and women in the busy lives that we lead today, you have to be intentional about putting your family and your faith first in your life.” 

Pence and his daughter join the show to explain how they have kept faith, family, and career in the right order in their lives.
