Victor Davis Hanson explains the long-running tensions between Jerome Powell and Trump, why Trump has dubbed him “Too Late Powell,” and the economic consequences for everyday Americans on today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”

“ The Wall Street Journal was forecasting a ‘stock crash,’ a ‘trade war,’ ‘uncertainty over tariffs,’ ‘anemic GDP,’ and all of the barometers… At that point, you would've thought that Powell, who agreed, basically, with the consensus of the economic media and most of the economists, why didn't he intervene in fears that they were right, that we were headed toward a recession and lower rates? Instead, he didn't do anything.

“ Jerome Powell has been in this fight with Donald Trump. … And whether we like it or not, he's acting emotionally or angrily to Donald Trump. And he has been under threat of being fired. He does not want to show that he's going to back down and lose the independence of the Fed to the president. The problem with that stance is it really hurts millions of Americans.”

Wednesday morning Alana Goodman of the Washington Free Beacon reported that a gentleman named Pin Ni, who is a US-based executive with luxury electric car maker KARMA Automotive gave $50,000 over two contributions to the gubernatorial campaign of former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger. Ni, more troubling, listed as a member of the Chinese Communist Party. 

US Election law prohibits campaign contributions from foreign nationals, and the Chinese government insists that you renounce your Citizenship in order to qualify for US dual citizenship. So, one or the other must be true. For Spanberger, a big contribution from an Electric Vehicle manufacturer that would certainly have an interest in making sure that the Virginia Clean Economy Act doesn’t get change or go away is problematic. Doubly ironic given the amount of angst that was expressed by the Democratic party leadership in 2021 about Glenn Youngkin’s extensive business ties having been CEO of the Carlyse Group before being elected Governor. However, that isn’t nearly the crime that accepting a political donation from a foreign national would be.

The Beacon story says that Ni sits on the board of directors for the Wanxiang Group, which he founded in 1994. The company’s 2025 annual report says that Ni had "been recognized" as an "Outstanding Communist Party Member of the Group" 15 times. Spanberger needs to address this but without any debates scheduled, Earle-Sears may not get a direct chance so it’s up to the Virginia press corps.

Before the story came out the Daily Signal spoke with Republican Party of Virginia Chair, State Senator Mark Peake about President Trump’s statements regarding endorsing Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in her race against Spanberger and her unwillingness to debate and that is the podcast you are about to listen to. After seeing the story, he told us; “It doesn’t surprise me that Chinese communists want Spanberger to win.  I am sure they have reviewed her voting record in Congress and prefer her to a true, conservative patriot like Winsome Sears.”

Victor Davis Hanson explains what this rhetoric really means, and why this racialized framing is not only intellectually hollow, but deeply dangerous for a pluralistic and Western democratic society on today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”

“He believed that black students on test scores or GPA or by traditional criteria were not competitive with other groups  … and therefore, you had to have a different type of vocabulary, a different type of approach for black students, in a way you wouldn’t for other students. This is not gonna work. We have tried that for 50 or 60 years. And we’ve seen that the Great Society specialization and fixation on race did not work.

“This is in the age of post-DEI, in a very reactionary, retrograde approach, that you’re going to single out particular groups and you’re going to emphasize particular plans, programs based on the color of their skin at a time when we’re all trying to transcend it because when we have done that, it didn’t work. It created tensions rather than alleviated them. It created suspicion and distrust rather than ending such things. It’s a retrograde tribal thought that goes back to pre-civilizational ideas.

On today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson breaks down the absurdity of the outrage and exposes the real history of eugenics—hint: it doesn’t come from the Right.

“ We have all sorts of models that pose for jean commercials. American Eagle have had black women, people, Hispanics, everybody. And do you remember the ad by Levi's for Beyonce? Levi's has her portrayed with a cowboy hat, a yellow wig, and in a country-western setting with Levi jeans. … Nobody objected, nobody said, ‘Beyonce is objectifying whiteness because, as an African American, she's got a blond wig on.’” 

“ A final warning or a piece of advice from Aristotle: We act to beauty by proportion and mathematics. As I said, Beyonce is beautiful, not because she's black or not because she's not white, or Sydney Sweeney is beautiful, not because of her skin color, but because she has, as Aristotle would say, perfect symmetry. And that's a universal idea.”
