The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | House Republicans ‘Did What They Had to Do’ on Debt Ceiling, CEO Says

The U.S. may "potentially" default on its debt "as early as June 1, if Congress does not raise or suspend the debt limit before that time," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a letter Monday to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

Alfredo Ortiz, president and chief executive officer of the nonpartisan Job Creators Network, says he's "honestly not surprised" by Yellen's letter, sent just days after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Republican-led Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023.

The legislation, which McCarthy introduced on April 19, would “limit federal spending, save taxpayer dollars,” and “grow the economy.” The legislation passed 217-215 in the House, but did not get a single vote from Democrats. Given Democrats’ control of the Senate, it is unlikely the bill will pass in its current form.

"Putting this now on June 1st, I think, basically, is to kind of try to force the hand of the Republicans," Ortiz says. "But quite frankly, I mean, the Republicans, from my perspective, did what they had to do."

"They passed the bill. That I think showed a lot of fiscal responsibility and hard choices that we have to make, and still allowed for $1.5 trillion of the debt to be raised," he says.

Ortiz joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the debt ceiling, President Joe Biden's upcoming meeting on the issue with top Republican and Democratic congressional leaders, and why he thinks the Environmental Protection Agency "is out of control."

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | Why Oklahoma Is Promoting School Choice, Standing Against DEI

Oklahoma is taking a lead on school choice programs and resisting far-left ideology in classrooms across the state.

“It is amazing how aggressive the Biden administration is with this radical agenda towards our schools,” Ryan Walters, Oklahoma's state superintendent of public instruction, says. When he came into office, Walters says he told staffers there, “We're not doing diversity, equity, and inclusion. We're not doing that here."

The leftist agenda in schools has gone well beyond DEI instruction, and now the Biden administration is considering changing the definition of sex in Title IX to include gender identity and sexual orientation, opening the door wide for biological boys and men to compete in girls and women's sports and to use their restrooms and locker rooms.

“We've already submitted comment to the Biden administration and told them, 'We're suing you if you move down this road,'” Walters said.

Walters joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the ways Oklahoma is fighting against the Left’s efforts to influence the next generation in the classroom and to discuss the state’s aggressive action to implement school choice programs.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | State OKs Bans on Transgender Treatments for Minors, TikTok in Bid to Keep Kids Safe

Montana recently passed a bill banning transgender treatments on minors.

“It's very important that we protect our children, especially physically, from these treatments that are permanent,” Montana state Rep. Kerri Seekins-Crowe says.

“There's not been a lot of studies done on the long-term effects of these [treatments],” the Republican lawmaker said, adding "but we also see a lot of detransitioners, or people who have regretted it because they were not given the adequate help that they needed and the treatment that they needed. They were just told to have surgery."

The Montana legislation, banning treatments such as cross-sex hormones and gender-reassignment surgeries, passed late last month, was signed into law Friday.

Seekins-Crowe joins "The Daily Signal" podcast to discuss the legislation and the state's action to ban TikTok.
