The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | What Finland Joining NATO Means for Russia, War In Ukraine, and How It Benefits America , National Security Expert Explains

Finland is joining NATO, and Victoria Coates says Russia is less than pleased.

Leaders in Moscow are “thoroughly outraged about this and claiming it causes some kind of intolerable threat to Russian security,” says Coates, a senior research fellow in international affairs and national security at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)

Finland will become the 31st NATO member on Tuesday, a move that Coates says is likely an embarrassment to Russia because counties in the region appear to “not [be] interested in joining with Russia" in the war against Ukraine.

Coates joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the significance of Finland entering NATO and what it could mean for the ongoing war in Ukraine

Coates also shares what we know about the imprisonment of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and how the Biden administration should be handling the situation.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | Energy Expert Stresses Need for More Pipelines After Train Derailment

An energy expert says the Feb. 3 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, underscores the need for more pipelines to transport potentially hazardous substances.

"This recent rail accident in East Palestine in Ohio has shown us that we need more pipelines to carry these potential dangerous chemicals, rather than using road and rail," says Diana Furchtgott-Roth, director of the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)

"Because with pipelines, the container stays still and the product moves within it. And the pipelines are often buried in the ground," Furchtgott-Roth says. "So, they're out of the way of other traffic, pedestrians, anyone like that, and the potential damage is very, very low."

Furchtgott-Roth added:

With rail and truck, these substances are going through people's communities, and they are generally very safe, but occasionally accidents do happen. But pipelines are the safest way of transporting oil and natural gas.

Furchtgott-Roth joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss Thursday's passage of HR 1, the Lower Energy Costs Act, in the House of Representatives and her thoughts on President Joe Biden’s anticipated veto of the bill.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | Biden Earns an ‘F’ on Energy Policies, Lawmaker Says as House OKs GOP Bill to Lower Costs

When it comes to President Joe Biden’s energy policies, he has earned “an F,” says Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-Mont.

Rosendale is one of 221 Republicans who voted Thursday in support of a bill, HR 1, the Lower Energy Costs Act. The vote was 225-204 with four Democrats joining the Republican majority and one GOP member voting against it, according to CBS News.

The legislation, which passed in the House, would “lower energy costs by increasing American energy production, exports, infrastructure, and critical minerals processing, by promoting transparency, accountability, permitting, and production of American resources, and by improving water quality certification and energy projects, and for other purposes,” according to the bill's text.

Rosendale and Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what is included in the bill and to discuss how Biden’s handling of America’s energy resources has affected the economy and even U.S. national security.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | Asian Studies Expert Suggests Ways to Diminish China’s Threat to Taiwan

A leading Asian studies expert is weighing in on how the U.S. can diminish the threat China poses to Taiwan, even as tensions between the two countries remain high.

"I think the first thing we need to do is clear a backlog of arms sales to Taiwan. We sell Taiwan advanced military hardware, and a number of important platforms that the Taiwanese have purchased have been backlogged, and this has been going on for years now," says Jeff Smith, director of The Heritage Foundation's Asian Studies Center. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)

"The second thing we need to do, I think, is help the Taiwanese to develop even better deterrence strategies and denial strategies and acquisitions," Smith says. "What can we do? What are the most effective military platforms that Taiwan could purchase and use in order to deny China if it decides to launch an invasion or at least to hold out long enough for the cavalry?" It's widely though that the U.S.—and possibly others, including Australia and Japan—would intervene in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

Smith joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how the Chinese government has infiltrated our lives; The Heritage Foundation's newly released report "Winning the New Cold War: A Plan for Countering China”; and the U.S. fentanyl crisis.
