The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | From SWAT Team to Statehouse: Missouri Lawmaker Feels a Calling to Serve

Justin Sparks has devoted his life to public service, although he never expected to find himself representing his St. Louis community in the Missouri House of Representatives.

After spending his entire professional career in law enforcement, the St. Louis native felt a calling from the Lord and a desire to making a bigger impact. Last November, Sparks ran for office to represent District 110, which covers western St. Louis.

Since taking office in January, he's emerged as a leader on top conservative priorities like reducing crime and fighting radical gender ideology. Sparks, a husband and father of six, spoke to The Daily Signal about the policy debates playing out in Missouri and why he encourages other Americans to get involved. Listen to the interview on "The Daily Signal Podcast" or read a lightly edited transcript below.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | What You Need to Know About Israeli Protests

With hundreds of thousands of Israelis taking to the streets in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem over reforms to the judicial system proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, what are Americans to make of it?

"Well, basically, what Netanyahu is proposing is to make the appointments of the judges less political and their powers less sweeping. The Supreme Court has been a very sort of left-leaning element in the Israeli government," says Victoria Coates, senior research fellow in international affairs and national security with the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)

"And so, it's a reform that a number of Israelis support, but making it somewhat more controversial is the fact that the prime minister himself is under investigation for various charges of corruption and bribery," Coates says. "And so, there is a perception—which I personally don't think is true—but that there's a broad public perception that he is trying to manipulate the courts for his own legal gain."

Coates further discussed the significance of the protests.

"I think it's really remarkable, and the estimates are as many as 700,000 people were out in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem last night, and that's a country of 9 million people," Coates says. "So, you're coming up on 10% of the country is participating in this. I think it certainly demonstrates how passionately Israelis feel about their politics and about their country, and the degree to which they feel participant in this process."

Coates joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss why Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, whether the protests could have larger ramifications for Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, and what the response has been like from the Biden administration.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | ‘I’ve Had to File a Few Police Reports,’ Libs of TikTok Creator Says

Chaya Raichik, the creator of Libs of TikTok, says she has "had to file a few police reports from threats" that she received.

"That's really part of the reason why I was anonymous to begin with, because as I started exposing all this stuff, the Left started coming after me and their reaction is not something that I ever expected," Raichik, author of the children’s book, “No More Secrets: The Candy Cavern," says. "And then when I saw that, the backlash and the way that they just wanted to silence me in any way they can, I was like, 'I think I'm going to stay anonymous because this is actually pretty scary.'"

"But then of course, I was doxxed, so my name was shared and I couldn't really be anonymous anymore. But I think at this point, I view it as sort of a compliment," Raichik says.

Raichik adds:

If you're not getting attacked, whether that's in the form of death threats or just in the form of name calling, harassment, insulting, bullying, if you're not being the victim of any that on the Right, then I think you're doing something wrong.

Raichik joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss what she thinks has contributed to her page’s success over the last two and half years, the most outrageous video she's ever seen on TikTok, and her response to people who say that she's anti-LGBTQ.

The Daily Signal - INTERVIEW | US Patent System Needs to Be Fixed, Inventor Rights Activist Says

An American inventor is speaking out about a law he says has significantly affected the country's ability "to lead the world in innovation and stay ahead of our adversaries."

"We're a 501(c)(4) [tax-exempt organization], and our mission is to restore to America something that has been actually just totally destroyed by Big Tech," Randy Landreneau, president of US Inventor, tells The Daily Signal. "And what that is is that if you're an inventor and you invent something really valuable, and you get a patent on it, you're supposed to have the legal ability to stop a large entity from just taking it, and that is what our patent system was created for."

Landreneau has numerous patents and owns Complete Product Development, which is "a product design and prototyping company based in Clearwater, Fla.," according to his US Inventor biography page

"That's what worked so well in America for 200 years, what enabled us to lead the world in innovation and stay ahead of our adversaries, etc.," Landreneau says. "And Big Tech got a law passed about 10 years ago that really drastically destroyed that. It made it virtually impossible now to stop a large entity from simply taking what you had invented and patented."

Landreneau was referring to the America Invents Act, which was passed by Congress and signed into law in 2011 by then-President Barack Obama, who at the time said the “much-needed reform will speed up the patent process so that innovators and entrepreneurs can turn a new invention into a business as quickly as possible.”

Landreneau joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the U.S. patent system and some of the challenges he and other U.S. inventors are facing today.
