The Daily Signal - Douglas Murray Explains How We Can Win the War on the West

A fight is raging for the soul of the West.

Great civilizations basking in the legacy of the Enlightenment and heroic men such as George Washington and Winston Churchill find themselves faced with an internal enemy. Some citizens of America and Europe, furious about perceived failures of the past, have decided the best way forward is to tear it all down.

But to British writer and commentator Douglas Murray, author of the new book "The War on the West: How to Prevail in an Age of Unreason," the "games" of self-loathing have only one outcome: utter destruction.

"If we play those games, then yes, of course, it's over, and others will take our place, as they inevitably would if a civilization turns self-loathing," Murray says.

Thankfully, a solution is at hand.

"The deepest well we need to draw upon is to try to change around the culture of ingratitude," Murray says. "We in the West need to transform our societies from societies of resentment into societies of gratitude, to recognize that what we have is highly unusual, and to have some gratitude for that, to feel grateful to that. And if we feel grateful for that, then to add to that inheritance as well."

Murray joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss his book and offer specifics on winning the war on the West.

We also cover these stories:

  • Michael Sussmann, a lawyer for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, is found not guilty on charges of lying to the FBI.
  • President Biden says he has a plan to flight inflation.
  • Supreme Court clerks soon may be required to turn over private phone records as well as sign affidavits, sources say, as part of a probe into the leaked opinion in a landmark abortion case.
  • Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, who has dominated in women's events, speaks with ABC's "Good Morning America."

The Daily Signal - The Other Side of J6: ‘Capitol Punishment’ Movie Tells Stories You Won’t Hear From Congress

During the month of June, lawmakers in Washington plan to hold six public hearings on the events that took place on January 6. Two of them are even scheduled during primetime TV in an effort by Democrats to maximize their attempt to frame what happened that day at the U.S. Capitol.

But there’s another side to the story that you won’t hear from the likes of Reps. Bennie Thompson, Adam Schiff, Liz Cheney, or other members of the House select committee. They determined long ago who to blame and what narrative to tell.

Now, thanks to a new documentary called “Capitol Punishment,” Americans are able to hear stories from the people who were there on January 6—in their own words and the ordeals they’ve faced since that day.

Joining "The Daily Signal Podcast" are two people who made the movie—actor Nick Searcy and director Chris Burgard.

The movie is available to watch at givemelibertynow.org and capitolpunishmentthemovie.com.

The Daily Signal - Ben Carson’s Vision for ‘Hopeful Future of Race in America’

What does someone’s skin color have to do with who he or she is? “Not a whole lot,” Dr. Ben Carson says.

Carson, a renowned brain surgeon, experienced racism as a child and even early on in his celebrated medical career.

But Carson says he never has considered the color of someone’s skin to be a defining factor of who they are.

“As a brain surgeon, obviously, when I open somebody's head, I'm operating on a thing that makes them who they are,” Carson says. “It's not their hair or their skin that makes them who they are. It's their brain that makes them who they are. ... So obviously, I'm not going to sit around and blame somebody for something that their forefathers did to my forefather.”

Carson, the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the Trump administration, is the author of the new book “Created Equal: The Painful Past, Confusing Present, and Hopeful Future of Race in America.”

Carson joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share a bit of his own story, as well as how America can embrace a future full of hope.

The Daily Signal - NBA Star Jonathan Isaac Shares How Christ Inspired Him to Stand Tall Amid BLM Protests

During the often violent Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, many athletes kneeled during the national anthem in a show of solidarity with the movement. But one man, Orlando Magic player Jonathan Isaac, stood instead.

Isaac is the author of a new book titled “Why I Stand” that details what led him to make that decision. He says his deep and personal relationship with Jesus Christ inspired him to stand.

“I tried my best to see it from Christ’s perspective,” Isaac explains. “And so, as I looked out and saw what was happening, I didn’t want to join into a fight. I wanted to have my own mind, my own mindset, and stand and say that ultimately the love of Christ has been the difference in my life. And I want to portray that to the world.”

Isaac joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to chat about his book and how his relationship with God guides his life.

We also cover these stories:

  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbot, a Republican, delivers remarks in the aftermath of the deadly shooting Tuesday at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

The Daily Signal - 4 Steps Every School Can Take to Help Prevent Shootings

There are four steps schools can take to prevent tragedies like the one in Uvalde, Texas, Steven Bucci, a Heritage Foundation visiting fellow, says. “[I]t doesn’t have to be like this,” Bucci says. “We can mitigate the risk of these kind of things happening. I won’t say that any system is perfect and is going to stop every tragic incident, but boy, we could do a better job at it than we’re doing.”

Americans across the nation are mourning with the people of Texas and all the families who lost loved ones in the shooting at Robb Elementary School

Two teachers and 19 students were killed by a gunman, leaving Americans to ask, how can we ensure a tragedy like this never happens again?

Bucci served our country for three decades as an Army Special Forces officer and top Pentagon official, and has served on the front lines of a number of tragedies. He joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss four practical steps every school can take to prevent shootings, and minimize casualties if one does occur.

The Daily Signal - Why Democrats’ Domestic Terrorism Bill Actually Goes After Political Opponents

Democrats are calling for a crackdown on domestic terrorism, but Republicans say their colleagues want to pass legislation that endangers the privacy of all Americans.

Democrats' proposed legislation is “nothing more than empowering the federal government to police thought and speech in the United States of America,” Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, says.

The House last week passed the bill, dubbed the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act, days after a gunman in Buffalo, New York, shot and killed 10. The bill is now before the Senate, which is expected to vote on it Thursday.

Lora Reis, director of The Heritage Foundation's Border Security and Immigration Center, says the legislation should be of concern to all Americans.

“I hope this bill fails this week because Americans, they don't deserve this,” Reis says, adding that the bill “is just a tool to go after political opponents.”

Reis joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what exactly is in the bill and the effects it would have on Americans if it clears the Senate.

Also on today's show, we cover these stories:

  • A shooting at an elementary school in Texas leaves 14 children and one teacher dead.
  • An illegal immigrant and suspected terrorist is allowed to wander the country for over two weeks.
  • The insurance company State Farm quickly reverses course on a plan to donate books on transgenderism and gender identity to school children.

The Daily Signal - With Beijing Breathing Down Taiwan’s Neck, What Signal Did Biden Just Send?

In Japan on Monday, President Joe Biden seemingly departed from previous American policy regarding Taiwan, announcing that the U.S. would militarily defend the tiny island nation if China were to invade.

Walter Lohman, director of The Heritage Foundation’s Asian Studies Center, says Biden's statement was a huge mistake.

"We want to keep the Chinese guessing about what the United States would do," he says of the long-standing policy of "strategic ambiguity."

Lohman joins the show to discuss what the implications of this seeming shift in policy would be, and what Beijing’s aims are regarding Taiwan.

We also cover these stories:

  • Following Democrats' claims that new election laws in Georgia would depress voter turnout, more Georgians are voting ahead of Tuesday's primaries than ever.
  • Biden says he doesn't think monkeypox will be as serious as COVID-19.
  • An early draft of a letter sent to the president by the National School Boards Association suggests the group planned to ask that the Army National Guard and military police be sent to certain school districts to handle parents protesting mandatory masking and controversial curriculums.
  • State Farm insurance company is encouraging employees to donate books on transgenderism to local schools and libraries in Florida and elsewhere around the country.

The Daily Signal - Ken Cuccinelli Warns of Catastrophic Consequences to Rescinding Title 42 at Border

Disclaimer: This interview was recorded before a federal judge announced Friday afternoon that the Biden administration could not rescind Title 42.

In the face of the worst crisis our southern border has seen in decades, President Joe Biden has said he intended to rescind the public health rule known as Title 42 by Monday, May 23. U.S. immigration officials have invoked Title 42 to quickly remove illegal migrants over concern for the spread of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases.

Now, even some Democrats are wary of the Biden administration's plan to end the public health measure at the northern and southern borders and have joined Republican lawmakers in cautioning officials against getting rid of it.

Ken Cuccinelli, a Trump administration homeland security and border official who previously was the Republican attorney general of Virginia, sees disaster on the horizon if Title 42 goes.

"If both the flow goes up to the worst prediction and Title 42 comes down, six times as many illegals will be staying in the United States as are happening on a daily basis today under the current open borders Biden policy," Cuccinelli says.

Cuccinelli joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the consequences of rescinding Title 42, as well as to offer solutions for states to help fix the border crisis.
