Parents were horrified during the COVID-19 pandemic as they discovered how left-wing activist teachers were indoctrinating their kids in the classroom.

Critical race theory, a Marxism-based ideology, burst onto the scene in a big way. The left claims that what’s being taught in classrooms isn’t critical race theory. But is that true?

Jonathan Butcher, an education expert at The Heritage Foundation, says critical race theory isn't just now showing up in classrooms. He contends it's been there for decades.

"[In the] 1980s, 1990s, you're having teachers become trained in the idea that America is systemically racist, that we should be teaching students not so much about what they share as Americans, but about their identities, the things that separate them and make them different from each other," Butcher explained.

Butcher found the trend so troubling, he wrote a book, released April 19, ”Splintered: Critical Race Theory and the Progressive War on Truth,” to help expose just how dangerous the ideology is.

He joins the show to talk about the book, reveal the truth about critical race theory in America’s schools, and prescribe some solutions to get it out of curriculums.

Cole Lyle held a gun in his hand, ready to take his own life, when a friend knocked on his door. 

“I'll be honest with you, in my opinion it is divine intervention because my finger was literally on the trigger,” Lyle, a Marine veteran, says. 

After six years in the military, Lyle was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. He had tried medication and was going to therapy, but none of it worked, he recalls. That’s when he began exploring the option of getting a service dog.

Lyle spent $10,000 of his own money on Kaya, a loving German shepherd, because the Department of Veterans Affairs didn't provide funds for acquiring service dogs. 

Kaya brought needed purpose back to his life, Lyle says, so he became an advocate of veterans getting access to service dogs. 

Today, Lyle is executive director of Mission Roll Call, a nonprofit that brings the needs of veterans directly to members of Congress. 

Lyle joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share his personal story and to explain how all Americans can help veterans who are struggling after their service to America.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is facing the threat of impeachment should Republicans reclaim control of the U.S. House. An unprecedented border crisis and its ravaging effects prompted 133 House Republicans to write to Mayorkas on Monday, citing "grave questions" about his "suitability for office."

Only once in U.S. history has the House impeached a Cabinet official; Secretary of War William Belknap was later acquitted by the Senate in 1876. Now, nearly 150 years later, pressure is building on Mayorkas.

Mark Morgan, acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the Trump administration, says the the problem on our southern border is about to get much worse. He joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain what's happening and why it matters to every American.

That's one reason he supports Mayorkas' impeachment. "He's turning a blind eye. He has failed the United States. He has failed this country, so he should be impeached," Morgan tells The Daily Signal.

Morgan, who previously served as chief of U.S. Border Patrol in the Obama administration and was acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is currently a visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation (publisher of The Daily Signal).

Three months into his tenure as Virginia’s attorney general, Jason Miyares is delivering on his promises to promote parental rights and punish violent criminals. Those issues animated voters last November and they’re now front and center for the state’s top law enforcement officer.

Miyares is part of a trio of Republicans who sent shockwaves through Richmond, unseating a two-term Democrat attorney general—the first to beat an incumbent for the job since 1885.

Just days after taking office, Miyares found himself defending Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s executive order empowering parents to decide if their kids should be masked in school. He hasn’t slowed down since.

Matthew Continetti is a journalist and historian of American conservatism. He is currently a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. He joins this Saturday Edition of the Daily Signal Podcast to discuss his new book, The Right: The Hundred-Year War for American Conservatism.

He also adds that much of conservatism is now led by the Heritage Foundation, Hillsdale College's DC Kirby Campus, and the Claremont Institute's Center for the American Way of Life. The challenge is for these institutions to help provide policy solutions rooted in a populist conservatism that is grounded in constitutional institutions.

Although he gained initial attention for speaking out against the genocidal Chinese Communist Party, pro basketball player Enes Kanter Freedom has been a human rights advocate for nearly a decade now.

Freedom says he believes that due to his status as a famous athlete, having played for five NBA teams, he has a responsibility to speak up for causes he's passionate about.

"If you are an athlete, you can inspire millions of people out there, especially kids, especially our young generation," says Freedom, who was born in Switzerland to Turkish parents. "If you are well educated enough, if you know what you are talking about, yes, it is important to stand up for things that you believe in."

Freedom, who became an American citizen last year, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to share his story of getting involved in human rights activism. He also offers advice for those of us who want to make a difference in the world.

Americans are worried about "three I's" right now: inflation, immigration, and general incompetence, Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., says.

Citizens across the country are "deeply concerned about grocery prices and the price of fuel to fill up the gas tank," Johnson says. "And they see the wave of illegal migrants coming over the border, and they don't see any end to it. They're frustrated with us for our inability to do anything about it right now."

Election integrity is essential to a functioning country. Americans deserve to know that their elections are being conducted fairly and that their votes count.

Unfortunately, many have reason to think our elections aren’t secure.

Deroy Murdock, a Fox News contributor and senior fellow at the Atlas Network, says he sees election integrity and voter fraud as issues that will determine the continued existence of America as we know it.

“We can’t even tolerate the appearance of vote fraud, because even the mere appearance of vote fraud causes people to lose confidence in our leadership and in our system,” says Murdock, whose columns appear regularly in The Daily Signal. “And pretty soon, our constitutional republic starts to dissolve.”

Abby Martinez knows firsthand how gender ideology can negatively affect a young life. 

Martinez's daughter Yaeli began taking cross-sex hormones in high school and changed her name to Andrew.

When Martinez raised concerns about the path her teen daughter was on, she lost custody of Yaeli to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. 

Yaeli later took her own life at age 19.

“I wish the system, instead of spending millions of dollars on these kids, having them in foster care, [would instead] support us as a parent and give us the tools that we need,” Martinez says.
