Which side will Europe take in a China-U.S. trade war?

Of all the scenarios facing Europe right now vis-à-vis their relationship United States and China, their best option would be to side with the U.S., argues Victor Davis Hanson on today’s “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”

“The third scenario is what I would suggest for the Europeans. They should say the following:

“‘Despite our disagreements with the Trump administration, the United States is an ally. And we know that we have been as victimized by Chinese mercantilism, high tariffs, cheating on patents, copyrights, dumping, financial money manipulation—all the things the United States complains about, we do too. In fact, we as Europeans in a whole have about the same deficit with China as the United States does. So, we are kindred spirits. So, what we will do is, even though we have disagreements on our surplus with the United States and their efforts to reduce it, we will ally with the United States.’

 “And that would represent about two-thirds of China's total trade action or monetary value.

Is Gov. Janet Mills of Maine an ‘Neo-Confederate’?

Yes, and “she is taking states’ rights to the extreme,” argues Victor Davis Hanson on today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”

After refusing to comply with a Trump administration order banning men from competing in women’s high school sports, the Department of Justice launched a civil lawsuit against the Maine Department of Education for failing to protect women in women’s sports, Attorney General Pam Bondi said Wednesday.

“Janet Mills may not know it, but she's an insurrectionist. She's a neo-Confederate. She is taking states' rights to the extreme. Rather than saying, ‘I oppose the federal government. I will go to court to stop you. But if I lose, I will comply because the states are subordinate to the federal’ —she's not doing that. She's right in the spirit of the old Confederacy…

“I can cite you chapter and verse from the poems of Catullus to the novels of ‘Satyricon,’ of Petronius, ‘The Satyricon,’ of men who dress up like women. Both as transvestites who are still, I guess you'd say heterosexual, but they have a fetish to wear women's clothes or that who really want to be women. In the case of a poem or two, they castrate themselves. It's found in ancient history.

 

“And statistically, if you go back before this controversy happened, it was a very small number of the population. About less than 1% identified as transgendered or transsexual. Then it became, in the last decade, the next civil rights frontier. And all of a sudden, we had universities where students were polled at 10% or 20% or 30%, thought they might want to transition. It became almost a cult following.”

Early this month, Harvard Law School students participated in a “Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon” workshop. Students were asked to "gather data to edit the Wikipedia pages of Big Law firms to reflect cases they have recently argued," according to The Washington Free Beacon.

What actually happened?

Several students singled out and warped the Wikipedia pages of big law firms who previously that they would cut back recruitment from universities that did not curb the spread of anti-Semitism on-campus following the Oct. 7 Hama terror attacks.

What are we getting at?

For decades, America’s elite law schools have degraded their standards in the pursuit of social justice and have become wholly dependent on foreign money.

It has been two years since Tucker Carlson answered a call on a Monday morning in late April to learn that Fox News had canceled his show.

“I got fired from Fox for saying things they didn't like,” Carlson told The Daily Signal during an exclusive interview at The Heritage Foundation's Annual Leadership Conference.

“That's all right, you know, it's not my company,” Carlson said of his ousting from Fox, adding, “I wasn't one of those people like, ‘you can't fire me.’ It's like, of course you can fire me!”

Fox was not the first major network to end its relationship with Carlson.

President Donald Trump is using tariffs to apply heavy pressure on China, but the president remains open to negotiations with China, according to Tucker Carlson.

“Well, of course he is,” Carlson said when asked if Trump is willing to negotiate with China. “I mean, the question is, who needs the other more? Does the U.S. need China more or China need the US? I can't answer that,” Carlson told The Daily Signal.

Only hours after new tariffs went into effect on about 90 countries around the world, Trump announced a 90 day pause on the “reciprocal tariff,” but an increased tariff on goods from China.

“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, Wednesday.

China and the U.S. “need each other,” Carlson said. “The deal has been for the past 30 years, we’ll buy your underpriced consumer goods, you buy our overpricing debt. And you know, in some ways that's worked great, in other ways it hasn't worked at all.”

Carlson was at the White House last week when Trump stood in the rose garden and announced his plan to increase tariffs on nations around the world. Despite knowing Trump for years and the president’s interest in tariffs as a negotiation tool, the conservative news commentator and former Fox News host said he was “shocked” by Trump’s new tariffs.

“I wasn't against what Trump was saying, but I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that's shocking that he said that. You can't erect trade barriers.’ ... It's like all the childhood orthodoxies were still rattling around in my head.”

Carlson sits down with The Daily Signal at The Heritage Foundation’s Annual Leadership Conference to discuss Trump’s recent use of tariffs and what the results may be.
