Take This Pod and Shove It - 12: “Sin City” by The Flying Burrito Brothers, w/ Sam Tallent

This week Danny and Tyler chat about country-rock pioneers, The Flying Burrito Brothers with standup, author, and drummer, Sam Tallent! (@SamTallent, Running the Light, Chubby Behemoth Podcast)

Sam talks to the boys about the lyrical versatility of “Sin City”, FBB’s traceable influence on artists like The Eagles, Orville Peck, and The Flaming Lips, and why he should have played football for Harvard. “Sin City,” a semi-apocalyptic semi-waltz that happens to be the Flying Burrito Brothers’ signature song, is from the group’s 1969 debut album (an album which somehow has still not sold enough to be certified gold, despite its influence).

Call it “Cosmic American Music” or call it “Country with a better backbeat,” but thanks to Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman’s infusion of psychedelic rock and blues (with some help from Sneaky Pete!), we have some of the most enduring country songs ever recorded.

Even though the Flying Burrito Brothers only have one highly acclaimed album...we gotta lotta recs for ya (including from Sam's dad!):

Hot Burrito #1
Images of Me
Do Right Woman
Dark End of the Street
Wild Horses
Juanita
Six Days on the Road
Dim Lights
Together Again
Do You Know How It Feels
Wheels
My Uncle
God’s Favorite Singer
If You Gotta Go
Hot Burrito #2

Take This Pod and Shove It - 11: “Crazy” by Patsy Cline

We'll admit: including this song on our podcast and playlist is almost TOO obvious. But we'd be remiss not to include this timeless crossover hit from the singular and phenomenal Patsy Cline, so "Crazy" is the song of the week!

You've almost certainly heard this song before, but it's such a *classic* that one might forget that it is in fact a *country* song. Danny and Tyler talk about Patsy's short but influential recording career, how she became a crossover hitmaker, her famous confidence, Willie Nelson's possible inspiration when writing "Crazy," and Patsy's tragic passing.

While Patsy Cline's Greatest Hits is an excellent place to start, if you're new to Patsy, here are some recs from Danny and Tyler:
Walkin’ After Midnight
She’s Got You
Heartaches
Strange
A Church, a Courtroom, and Then Goodbye
Back in Baby’s Arms
Your Cheatin’ Heart
Hungry For Love
Why Can’t He Be You
Blue Moon of Kentucky

Take This Pod and Shove It - Catch-up and Mustard #1: Ten Songs Deep

We're taking a one week break from our normal format to put out this double-stuffed special episode we are calling Catchup and Mustard! (We'll have another regular episode next week)

Now that ten song episodes have been released, we wanted to something we've been meaning to do, which is chat about WHY people hate or used to hate country music. Via Twitter and Instagram we asked, and you responded!

We also play a special country music trivia game, and try to decide if certain country-ish songs by rock and pop artists are at least 51% country.

Take This Pod and Shove It - 10: “You Can Have the Crown” by Sturgill Simpson, w/ Eli Coyote Mandel

This week Danny and Tyler discuss one of their very favorite country artists of past or present: Sturgill Simpson. And they’re joined by fellow comedian, banjo player, and Sturgill fan, Eli Coyote Mandel (@elicoyote, SNL, Search Party)! Eli breaks down the Pete Seeger to John Prine to Sturgill Simpson pipeline, and how he went from hating country to loving it. The boys talk about Sturgill’s excellent storytelling, his rise to country stardom, and his refusal to stick to any one genre. We’re confident that if you’re a fan of folksy goodheartedness and/or fiery guitar licks you’re gonna like Sturgill.

It was hard to narrow down, but here are some more Sturgill recs from Eli, Danny, and Tyler:
Turtles All The Way Down
Sea Stories
In Bloom
Life of Sin
I’d Have To Be Crazy
The Promise
Brace For Impact (Live a Little)
Paradise [from the Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows vol 2 John Prine tribute album]
Railroad of Sin
A Little Light
Call to Arms

RIP to Hargus "Pig" Robbins (January 18, 1938 - January 30, 2022), who was mentioned in this episode (recorded in fall 2021). The Hall of Famer played not only with Sturgill Simpson, but with Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Bob Dylan, and just about everybody else. One of the best pianists of any genre.

Take This Pod and Shove It - 9: “Finally Friday” by George Jones

Johnny Cash once said, "When people ask me who my favorite country singer is, I say, 'You mean besides George Jones?'"

This week Danny and Tyler discuss the legendary George Jones, often considered to have the greatest voice in all of country music. And while there are over a dozen #1 country hits to choose from in Jones’ catalog, the song of the week is “Finally Friday,” the lesser-known closing track from Jones’ 1992 album, Walls Can Fall (released the same year Jones was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame).

“Finally Friday” is sung as if it’s a weekly celebration Jones has been partaking in for decades. And even though he didn’t write this track, Danny and Tyler tell stories of Jones’ antics, adventures, and struggles which suggest he very well could have.

George Jones has hundreds (thousands?) of songs, but here's a few recs to get you started if you're new to him, from Tyler and Danny:
He Stopped Loving Her Today
The Race is On
White Lightning
Tennessee Whiskey
Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes
I Just Don’t Give A Damn
I Don’t Need Your Rocking Chair
He Still Thinks I Care

Take This Pod and Shove It - 8: “The Pill” by Loretta Lynn, w/ Alex Kumin

This week spotlights Loretta Lynn’s 1975 crossover hit, “The Pill,” one of the most controversial country singles of all time. To discuss Loretta, birth control, and the normalizing of sexual health education, Danny and Tyler are joined by the brilliant and hilarious Alex Kumin (@alexkumin, Comedy Central, Comedians You Should Know).

Everyone from Owen Bradley to Reba McEntire to Jack White says that Loretta Lynn is one of the smartest country songwriters of all time, and they’d all agree she’s a fearless badass too. According to Tyler Mahan Coe, Loretta Lynn had more songs banned from radio than all male country artists in the 20th century combined. What gets a female vocalist banned from country music radio? What makes a woman "radical" within a male-dominated industry? Is wanting birth control even controversial? Give this week’s episode a listen, where we answer those questions.

New to Loretta? Want to hear more? Here are our other recs:

Fist City
You’re Lookin’ At Country
You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly (with Conway Twitty)
Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man (with Conway Twitty)
Portland Oregon (with Jack White)

Out of My Head and Back In My Bed

Take This Pod and Shove It - 5: “Seven Spanish Angels” by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson, w/ David Gborie

Willie Nelson once said Ray Charles did more for country music than any single artist has ever done. On this week’s episode, comedian David Gborie (@coolguyjokes87, Comedy Central, All Fantasy Everything) joins Danny and Tyler to explore Ray Charles’ tremendous impact on country music, and the largely overlooked and unsung early black influence on the genre.

Ray Charles and Willie Nelson are both titans of the music world, and were friends in real life, and so it is very fitting that together they sang the best song on Ray’s country album, “Friendship.” The boys talk about story and lyrics of “Seven Spanish Angels,” what makes someone a “Chris Gaines-type,” George Jones and Ray gettin’ into antics, and fighting drunk horses. There’s some serious stuff, some silly stuff, and it’s a hootin’ hollerin’ good time.

If you're new to Ray or Willie, here's a few other recs from the boys and David:

The album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music (Vol 1 and 2) by Ray Charles (some specific favorites are "Bye Bye Love," "Hey Good Lookin'," and "You Are My Sunshine.")
And other big Ray hits like "Night Time Is The Right Time" and "I Got A Woman"

And also, "Buddy," and "If You've Got The Money I've Got The Time" by Willie Nelson

(And don't worry, there's more of both Ray and Willie to come in the future.)
