The Daily Signal - The Next Generation of Courageous Leaders

Generation Z is already making its mark on America. Born after 1996, these young Americans came of age in an era of rapid technological change—smartphones, social media, and our interconnected world.

The oldest are already in the workforce while others are in the process of figuring out their careers. Fortunately, there are good organizations to provide the leadership and training for this next generation.

The Fund for American Studies is one of them. It has influenced the lives of thousands of conservative leaders, journalists (including The Daily Signal's own Fred Lucas), and others since its founding in 1967.

The organization is currently recruiting for its summer programs, which include international affairs, public policy and economics, journalism and communications, business and government relations, and leadership and the American presidency. Learn more at DCinternships.org.

On today's show, Roger Ream, president of The Fund for American Studies, explains how his organization is developing the next generation of courageous leaders.

The NewsWorthy - Special Edition: Hate Changing Clocks? Here’s Why We Do It

It’s been almost a week since Daylight Saving Time began. Why we do change our clocks twice a year? Polls have shown most American adults don’t like it. The Senate just easily passed a bill to stop the practice of changing our clocks, although if it actually becomes law, it would be up to the states whether to stay on Standard Time or switch to Daylight Saving Time year-round.

Today, we’re sharing a bit about DST’s past. Here to break it down for us is the man who wrote the book on time, Dr. Mike O'Malley. He’s the author of “Keeping Watch: A History of American Time,” and he teaches history at George Mason University. O'Malley explains why the very idea of a man-made clock was controversial in the beginning, how it evolved into the practice of changing our clocks twice a year, and some pros and cons of it all.

The Daily Signal - How the Conservative Movement Was Built

Stan Evans helped build the conservative movement by founding the American Conservative Union, the Conservative Political Action Conference, and establishing the National Journalism Center. He was, in addition, a tremendous journalist and thinker. His book, "The Theme Is Freedom," should be a conservative classic, Steven Hayward observes in his new book, "M. Stanton Evans: Conservative Wit, Apostle of Freedom."

What also made Stan Evans so very unique was his tremendous humor which he used to undermine Progressive moralizing. Hayward notes that a standard liberal critique of America was to say that any country that can land a man on the moon, can enact x progressive policy. Evans's response was "any country that can land a man on the moon can abolish the income tax." Evans once said to the consternation of liberals at Princeton that "I didn't support Nixon until after Watergate. Look, after wage and price controls, Watergate was a breath of fresh air." They were not amused, but we can be and learn from this giant of conservative journalism and institution building.

The Daily Signal - Getting Squeezed at Pump? Blame Biden, Not Putin

All across the country, Americans are facing staggering gasoline prices, pinching their wallets even further as inflation runs rampant. But what’s causing gas prices to skyrocket?

The Biden administration blames Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine, as well as greedy U.S. business owners, for the sharp rise in prices. But that doesn’t pass the smell test for Katie Tubb, a senior policy analyst for energy and environmental issues at The Heritage Foundation.

“I think it’s incredibly disingenuous for the administration to say that, in part because Americans aren’t stupid and they saw prices go up before Russia invaded Ukraine,” Tubb says. “And so I find that, honestly, a very discouraging characterization by the Biden administration.”

Tubb joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what’s really causing soaring gas prices, and how the Biden administration needs to respond to fix it.

We also cover these stories:

  • Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., criticizes Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson for her writings and rulings on sex offenders.
  • The Justice Department announces charges against five people accused of acting on behalf of Communist China and stalking, spying on, and harassing American citizens.
  • The New York Times reports that the laptop left by Hunter Biden in 2019 in a Delaware repair shop, and its contents, are authentic.

The Daily Signal - He Lost His Son to Opioids. Now This Father Addresses the Crisis in America.

Over 100,000 Americans die each year from opioid overdoses. One of them was 21-year-old Garrett Holman.

His father, Don Holman, has worked ceaselessly to educate the public about the scourge of opioids and how they affected his family.

"This tragedy ripped our family apart," Holman says. "At this point in time, after losing my son, no matter what I accomplish or what I do, I don't feel like I'll ever win."

"I can lose less if I can do something," he says. "It may be talking to you today, it may be testifying in front of Congress. It may be talking to my Uber driver on the way home and [finding] out that they have a child going through something, and I can share just something to encourage them or give them some guidance."

Holman joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to share his family's story and tell you how you can help if someone in your life suffers from an opioid addiction.

We also cover these stories:

  • In a video address to Congress, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeals for more U.S. aid.
  • President Joe Biden announces $800 million more in military assistance to Ukraine.
  • For the first time in three years, the Federal Reserve raises interest rates.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave a speech in front of Congress today. Zelenskyy urged America to continue supporting Ukraine as Russian forces march their way through the country. He also encouraged America to enact a no-fly zone around Ukraine to stop Russian terror in the skies. But what is a no-fly zone? And is it a good idea?
