Big Technology Podcast - Should Facebook and Twitter Have Banned Donald Trump? A Conversation With Ryan Mac of BuzzFeed News

Over the past week, both Facebook and Twitter suspended President Donald Trump’s account. These companies don’t take such aggressive action lightly, and it took Trump sending a mob toward the U.S. Capitol, which they eventually breached, to force the issue.

For years, BuzzFeed News senior reporter Ryan Mac and I have been watching these companies’ every move. Previously as colleagues at BuzzFeed. Ryan joined me this week on the Big Technology Podcast for a discussion on whether the social platforms’ moves were merited, where they go from here, and how he thinks about all the internal Facebook communication he’s obtained in his reporting.

Security Unlocked - Tracking Nation State Actors

Watchdogs in tow, hosts Nic Fillingham and Natalia Godyla are joined by guest Randy Treit, Principal Security Leader at Microsoft, to examine the process of identifying the source of a threat and stopping the spread by protecting “patient zero.” Randy has a few key tricks up his sleeve as a defender, but you can decide if they’re more impressive than the antics he and his identical twin have pulled while working at Microsoft.

In the second segment, Jeremy Dallman, Principal Program Manager at Microsoft, discusses why some bad actors are known in the security world under some of the most seemingly harmless codenames, such as “Fancy Bear” and “Charming Kitten”, and highlights the techniques his team is using to protect Microsoft’s customers from Nation-State actors.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • How Microsoft is defending and protecting patient zero
  • The history of Defender and antimalware
  • The process of finding gaps in protections
  • The importance of protecting customers from Nation-State actors
  • How and why security vendors use codenames to refer to threat activity groups

Some Questions We Ask:

  • What is different about focusing on patient zero than other aspects of security?
  • How does Microsoft measure the false positive rate in protecting patient zero?
  • What tools are being used on a day-to-day basis in defender security?
  • Why does Microsoft partner with the industry to identify Nation-State actors?
  • How many groups are utilizing AI and ML to enhance their ability to become a threat?

Code Story: Insights from Startup Tech Leaders - S4 E2: Charlie & Chinmay, RidePanda

Charlie Depman grew up in Connecticut, then went to college in Canada - pursuing environmental studies. His first job out of college was to be the Asia regional coordinator for an environment NGO, or non-government organization. He writes short sci-fi stories, and as he was learning to code, he discovered that he could now create these future stories with code, rather than just write them. He's been into bicycles since his first trip to China, prior to college - and has bought, built and used many different types of bikes... including an ice bike with metal studded tires.

Chinmay Malaviya grew up in New Delhi with engineers as parents - so math and science was always a thing growing up. He ended up doing his undergrad in Singapore, studying computer science. Funny enough, he is the trained engineer in his current venture. After trying out big companies and computer research early on in his career, he realized that he didn't like either one. He took the leap into the startup world with Food Panda, and eventually got involved with Lime, the popular micro mobility platform. At Lime, Chinmay was exposed to the environmental challenges we are facing as a society, especially around transportation.

Charlie & Chinmay got together early in 2020, with a shared passion for reducing transportation related emissions by creating the one stop e-mobility shop - complete with a marketplace and vetting system for the best micro mobility options available.

This is the creation story of RidePanda.

The Stack Overflow Podcast - What would you pay for /dev/null as a service?

How could you not love a team with a bio like this: "We’re a young and dynamic team of messy data-scientists who have failed at being employed on the real market. Our experience in losing data and throwing files away is more than amazing! Over the years, we have managed to get rid of so much important data at home and even at work." Find out how you pay other people to throw your data away here.

The New York Times reports on the rising prices of old computers and their parts. Retro-computing is fun, especially when you're stuck at home for...feels like a while now.

Stack Overflow memes have made it to Tik Tok, and it is joyous.

To round things out we chat about our love of e-ink, the desire to buy a reMarkable 2, and this amazing piece of digital wall art.
