Philosophers In Space - 0G69: The Power and Cyborg Theory, Part 1

Finally! We've been waiting so long for this, I almost thought we'd never get here. And by here I mean the collapse of the patriarchy.

If only pod notes made it so. No, this week and next we're cover Naomi Alderman's The Power. To keep us from mansplaining our way through a feminist classic, we're joined by our future gender overlord, Hannah Marcus (@sligers118 on Twitter), a MA student in cultural studies who has done work specifically on The Power. We start by covering the feminist Cyborg theory, and then begin to apply that theory to one of the most multifaceted texts we've examined so far.

Stuff They Don't Want You To Know - Uncle Sam Opens The Gateway: The Monroe Institute

From the late 1970s to the 1980s, the US Government paid for intelligence officers to undergo weeklong training sessions at a remote place called the Monroe Institute. Training sessions themselves aren't particularly abnormal -- but these officers weren't learning new languages, the latest news about satellites and so on. Instead, the Institute was using hypnosis to teach them astral projection, ESP and clairvoyance. The news went public via a declassified CIA document released in 1984, but questions remain: Was this all a waste of money? Or was there something else to the story?

Serious Inquiries Only - SIO201: Did Al Franken Get Railroaded? with Jamie Lombardi

Recently, a New Yorker article made a case for Al Franken and why he didn't get the due process he deserved. It points to some inconsistencies in Franken's first accuser's story, and explains some misconceptions about the USO tour and the skits that he wrote. But does the evidence justify the central claim - that he was railroaded and shouldn't have had to resign? Joining me to discuss this question, as well as the wider #metoo implications, is Jamie Lombardi! Jamie also introduces herself and gives some of her background and we talk about a 'free speech in academia' talk that she is giving in the fall.
