The Allusionist - 93. Gossip

‘Idle’, ‘trivial’, ‘scurrilous’: the word ‘gossip’ is often accompanied by uncomplimentary adjectives. But don’t dismiss it; from childbirth to Hollywood to political analysis to whisper networks, gossip may be more useful and serious than you realise. Lainey Lui, founder of laineygossip.com, and Buzzfeed News’ senior culture writer (and doctor of celebrity gossip) Anne Helen Petersen explain why.

Stuff They Don't Want You To Know - Who killed Fred Hampton?

The Black Panther Party For Self-defense was founded in Oakland, California in 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. They originally wanted to protect local residents from police brutality. One prominent Black Panther activist, Fred Hampton, was killed during an FBI/Chicago Police Force raid on December 4th, 1969. Officially speaking, his death was an unfortunate accident. However, 50 years later multiple scholars, journalists and historians believe there’s more to the story.

Serious Inquiries Only - SIO179: Phil Torres on X-Risks and Pinker’s Sloppy Scholarship

Returning to the show is everyone's favorite scholar of global catastrophic risks, Phil Torres! In the first half of the show, we discuss how global risk has changed and evolved in the years since Trump was elected. I also ask Phil if climate change has gotten so dire that it overshadows other existential risks. In the second half, we discuss the recent article Phil wrote for Salon, in which he was very critical of some of Steven Pinker's scholarship in his book Enlightenment Now. Pinker responded in a roundabout way on Jerry Coyne's blog. I also highly recommend you check out this thread by Mangy Jay on Twitter in which she breaks down some other problems with Pinker's book. Check out Phil's latest book!

Stuff They Don't Want You To Know - Returning To The Moon

The nation of China recently made international news by successfully completing an unmanned landing on the far side of Earth’s moon, marking a pivotal point in the resurgent space race. So why do some observers believe there’s more to the story?

Philosophers In Space - 0G43: Bandersnatch and Quantum Immortality

Welp, for better or worse, you're in the timeline where the will of the collective has pulled the pod suddenly back to Black Mirror. Everyone spent some portion of their holiday deep in some Bandersnatch, and we're here to stack meta analysis on meta analysis till the whole thing becomes a satirical singularity, which I'm now calling a Satirelarity (that's terrible, don't ever use that). If you feel like this episode doesn't address the problems of Bandersnatch enough, keep refreshing and another episode from a connected timeline will be along. In the meantime, we're talking quantum immorality, many worlds interpretations of quantum theory, and all sorts of stuff that are way above our pay grades. Here's some articles with a few comprehensible paragraphs:
