Serious Inquiries Only - SIO161: Mandisa Thomas, President of Black Nonbelievers

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mandisa Thomas, the president and founder of Black Nonbelievers! Mandisa talks about her fascinating background and the work she's doing, and then we go on to talk about the black experience, some of the history involved, and how it is unique within atheism. We talk about what organizations might do to better serve a diverse community. For all the challenges we've faced as a country lately, Mandisa does have some optimism about the future and talks about why. Make sure to check out her Patreon here!

Leave Thomas a voicemail! (916) 750-4746, remember short and to the point!

Philosophers In Space - 0G26: Pickle Rick and Toxic Fandom, Part 1

Wub a lub a dub dub and other overused catchphrases! What up my squanches? This week we dive into the beating heart of Rick and Morty fandom. We're talking Pickle Rick, arguably the best episode in the best season of one of the best shows in any possible universe. We talk about the whole arc of the show and why some fans who identify strongly with Rick have trouble keeping up with the character's personal growth, to the detriment of everyone who wants to enjoy Rick and Morty. Aw Geeze

Next week we're looking at Galaxy Quest as a meditation on how to grow from toxic fandom back into healthy fandom.

Ologies with Alie Ward - Surgical Oncology (BREAST CANCER) with Donna-Marie Manasseh

(Bonus: I bleeped any curse words so you can share this episode with your kids and your grandma.)

Yes, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month but Dr. Donna-Marie Manasseh spends 12 months a year as a tumor hunter, saving lives. She is brilliant, uplifting, hilarious and a hero, quite honestly. She sat down in her Brooklyn office to talk about prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, when to get screened, what to do if you feel something weird, how to look forward to mammograms, how men can help family members stay informed, self-care and how she unwinds. Also: getting help with boob honkery, and rubbing rocks on your pits. This episode might be required listening for literally ... everyone. All the people.

Dr. Donna-Marie Manasseh is the Chief of Breast Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center

A few Breast Cancer Awareness resources: cancer.org, breastcancer.org, komen.org

A portion of Patreon donations this month were donated to breast cancer research.

The Allusionist - 86. Name Therapy

“It’s the word that you use the most often and the soonest to describe yourself, and yet nobody’s really ever talked about how it kind of makes me feel like this.” Until Duana Taha, who, after a lifetime of feelings about her own unique name, became the Name Therapist.

Duana offers advice on how to name your baby/future adult, so their name works shouted across a playground, whispered into an ear, scribbled on a coffee cup. She also deals with your concerns about being named after a relative or parent’s ex, having a name that elicits playground taunts, or doesn’t describe you as an individual at all.

You're Wrong About - Shaken Baby Syndrome

Mike tells Sarah how an over-simplified diagnosis, over-confident doctors and over-zealous prosecutors combined to get thousands of innocent parents thrown in prison. Digressions include food poisoning, Sherlock Holmes and 1950s medical ethics. Mike wanted to mention Louise Woodward but he forgot.
