Everything Everywhere Daily - Galaxies

For most of human existence, we looked up at the night sky and thought that was all there was to the universe.

However, in the 20th century, as telescopes improved, we made a shocking discovery. The universe was much, much larger than we supposed, and some of those points of light in the sky were, in fact, collections of stars themselves.

Learn more about galaxies, what they are made of, and all about our own, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

NPR's Book of the Day - Musician Questlove and crime writer S.A. Cosby on their new children’s book

In the new children's book The Rhythm of Time from crime writer S.A. Cosby and musician Questlove, time is like a song. That's what they told NPR's Ayesha Roscoe when they talked about their book, which follows a kid from Philly and his best friend as they travel back in time to see a rap group from the 90s that broke up.

Everything Everywhere Daily - Lady Jane Grey: Queen of England?

Probably the most consequential monarch in British history was Henry VIII. He upended much of English society by changing the religion in the country from the top down.

He also left in his wake a century of controversy and turmoil about the succession of the monarchy. In all of that controversy, one figure wound up being an asterisk in the list of British Monarchs.

Someone who only ruled for nine days, if it can be said they ruled at all.

Learn more about Lady Jane Grey, the shortest-serving English monarch….maybe, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

NPR's Book of the Day - Mary Louise Kelly on her memoir ‘It. Goes. So. Fast. The Year of No Do-Overs’

In her new memoir, All Things Considered co-host Mary Louise Kelly talks about the time she got a call from her son's school nurse while she was boarding a Black Hawk helicopter in Baghdad. Kelly joined NPR's Scott Simon to discuss this and other stories she shares in It. Goes. So. Fast. The Year of No Do-Overs – which follows Kelly as she looks at the balance of work and motherhood, intention and memory

All of us have some sort of mental map inside our heads for how the world is laid out. North America is north of South America. Europe is west of Asia. et Cetra.

Everything Everywhere Daily - The Pantheon

Located in the heart of Rome is one of the oldest standing buildings in the world. Unlike other ancient structures, it isn’t a ruin. For almost 2,000 years, it has been in continuous use.

When it was built, it was an unrivaled architectural masterpiece. Today, it remains the largest building of its type, having never been surpassed in all of history.

Learn more about the Roman Pantheon, how it was built, and what makes it unique on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

Everything Everywhere Daily - Arbor Day

Every year the last Friday in April in the United States is Arbor Day.

Arbor Day is not the sexiest holiday on the calendar. I don’t think anyone listening is getting the day off from work, and you don’t see used car dealerships offering Arbor Day sales.

Nonetheless, for over 150 years, Arbor Day has highlighted the importance of trees and has encouraged their planting, and it is something that has been adopted all over the world.

Learn more about Arbor Day and the importance of tree planting on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

NPR's Book of the Day - Two novels offer new perspectives on the women of Greek mythology

Today's episode starts with a familiar feeling – the way your heart drops when a book character that you love doesn't get the outcome you wanted for them. But the authors we hear from both took that and ran with it, writing new outcomes for the women of Greek mythology they think are misunderstood. First, Madeline Miller tells NPR's Barrie Hardymon about her novel Circe, which details the goddess' backstory. Then, Tiziana Dearing at WBUR's Radio Boston speaks with Rebecca Caprara about Spin, her re-telling of Arachne the weaver's tale.
