Curious City - Soul Train: How Chicago birthed the “hippest trip in America”

For more than 3 decades, Soul Train brought the coolest music and dancers to TV sets across the country. It also featured the coolest host, Don Cornelius, who started the program in Chicago in a studio the size of a small living room at WCIU Channel 26. On the 53rd anniversary of Soul Train going national, we take you back to its earliest days, and see how it still looms large over local culture.

Everything Everywhere Daily - The Queen of Sheba (Encore)

All three of the holy books from great monotheistic faiths share a similar story about a Queen from a land in the south who traveled to Jerusalem to meet King Solomon.

This queen, who is said to have come from a land called Sheba, held not only the fascination of Solomon but of people for almost 3000 years.

But did she really exist, and if she did, where exactly did she come from?

NPR's Book of the Day - Terrance Hayes’ poems span history, fables and quarantine in ‘So to Speak’

Writing is a practice – especially for MacArthur Genius Grant and National Book Award winner Terrance Hayes. His new collection of poems, So to Speak, comes out of that practice during turbulent times: COVID quarantine, the 2020 protests after the killing of George Floyd. And they reach further back, too, to the Jim Crow South and his mother's youth. In today's episode, Hayes speaks with NPR's Mary Louise Kelly about engaging with language and reimagining family members in a new light.

Everything Everywhere Daily - Antimatter

It is the most expensive substance in the world by a wide margin.

When it was first proposed, it was actually done as a joke. However, decades later, the joke turned out to have been true.

It is a fundamental part of the universe, and by all accounts, it should be everywhere, yet it can’t be found anywhere, and physicists aren’t really sure why.

Learn more about antimatter, how it was discovered, and what it is on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

NPR's Book of the Day - ‘Good Fortune’ reimagines ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in early 2000s Chinatown

In C.K. Chau's new novel, Good Fortune, Elizabeth Chen is highly wary of the Wong brothers who have swooped in to buy a New York City community center. But where Elizabeth sees a threat to her neighborhood, her mother sees an opportunity – and not just for their block. In today's episode, Chau speaks with NPR's Ailsa Chang about reframing Pride and Prejudice as an early aughts story about love and aspiration in a Cantonese American family, and how reframing certain characters as immigrants brings a whole new level to their outlook on relationships.

Everything Everywhere Daily - The Kingdom of Tonga

Located in the South Pacific, squarely within the Polynesian Triangle, lies the Kingdom of Tonga.

While there are many islands and several countries within that region, Tonga has a unique history among them.

The Tongans were one of the most dominant cultures in the Pacific, ruled an extensive sea-based empire, and were one of the only people in the Pacific who were never technically colonized by Europeans.

Learn more about the Kingdom of Tonga, its history, and its culture on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

NPR's Book of the Day - ‘Filthy Rich Politicians’ scrutinizes the wealth of elected officials

In Filthy Rich Politicians, conservative columnist Matt Lewis presents some startling figures. Senator Rick Scott: net worth of approximately $200 million. Representative Michael McCaul: $125 million. Nancy Pelosi: $46 million. In his book, Lewis takes a close look at how people get richer after they're elected to office, and what this wealth means for our political systems. He speaks with NPR's Steve Inskeep about how politicians amass money not just for themselves, but their families – and how Donald Trump is a prime example of that.

Everything Everywhere Daily - Project Orion

In the years immediately following the end of the Second World War, several of the scientists who took part in the Manhattan Project had an explosive idea.

They wondered if we could harness the incredible power of atomic bombs and put them to use for peaceful purposes.

In particular, what if we could use atomic bombs to literally blast ships into space?

This idea went far further than you probably think it did.

Learn more about Project Orion and the quite serious idea of blasting ships into space on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
