Everything Everywhere Daily - The Tour de France

In July of every year, over the course of three weeks, the world’s best road cyclists assemble in France to compete in the world’s premier bicycling race: the Tour de France.

The competition is one of the most grueling in all of sports and cyclists often have to endure levels of pain and exhaustion which are seldom seen in sports.

Over the 120 years, it has been in existence, it has seen its share of drama and controversy, sometimes due to competition and sometimes due to politics.

Learn more about the Tour de France and its 120-year history, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

Everything Everywhere Daily - Exoplanets

Ever since astronomers figured out that the stars in the sky are just like our sun, they began wondering if those stars had planets just like our sun.

For centuries this remained an unanswerable question. Telescopes and techniques weren’t advanced enough to get an answer one way or another.

Eventually, however, astronomers developed methods to detect if there were planets outside of our solar system, and when they did, they found them everywhere.

Learn more about exoplanets, planets that orbit around other stars, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

Everything Everywhere Daily - Two-Year Anniversary Show

On July 1, 2020, I published the very first episode of this podcast. Since then, it has been quite a journey.

Some of you have been along for the entire ride, some of you found me along the way, and some of you are brand new.

I’ve done some special episodes in the past about how I started this podcast, but in this anniversary episode, I want to do something a bit different.

Learn more about why this podcast exists and who it was made for, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

NPR's Book of the Day - Danielle Evans and Brit Bennett on the lies we tell ourselves

Today, two takes on stories we tell to make ourselves feel better and the consequences of believing them. First, author Danielle Evans' short story collection, The Office of Historical Corrections. The title story is about a fictional agency that fact checks in real time but, as she told former NPR host Noel King, it's less powerful than you might think. Then, the story of a Black woman's decision to pass as white and the decades-long fallout of that choice, in The Vanishing Half. Author Brit Bennett told NPR's Mary Louise Kelly that the point of the story isn't to moralize.

Bay Curious - The WWII Prison Camp in Pacifica That’s Been Largely Erased

Sharp Park in Pacifica was the site of a prison camp during World War II, where residents deemed "highly dangerous" were sent. It's lesser-known than the larger Northern California camps, like Tanforan or Tule Lake. In this episode, we learn what is known about this camp, and get to know some of the people who passed through its gates.

Additional Reading:

Reported by Adhiti Bandlamudi. Bay Curious is made by Olivia Allen-Price, Katrina Schwartz, Sebastian Miño-Bucheli and Brendan Willard. Additional support from Kyana Moghadam, Jen Chien, Jasmine Garnett, Carly Severn, Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez, Jenny Pritchett, Vinnee Tong, Ethan Lindsey and Holly Kernan.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this episode included an inaccurate statement about Japanese allies. It has been corrected. We regret the error.

Everything Everywhere Daily - Diamonds Are Forever

It has been said that they are a girl’s best friend, they are forever, and that they are the hardest substance in the world.

In nature, they are created deep beneath the Earth at extreme temperatures and pressures, yet in the laboratory, they can be created in a near-vacuum.

For all practical purposes, you can’t scratch it, yet you can cut it, and economists have noted the paradox of how it is priced compared to water.

Learn more about diamonds, how they are made, and how they are used, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

NPR's Book of the Day - A lifetime of secrets unfold in ‘Black Cake’

Author Charmaine Wilkerson's new novel, Black Cake, is all about identity; who we are and how we fit into this world. Estranged siblings, Benny and Byron are left a recording by their late mother after she dies. The recording is full of secrets about their family that force Benny and Byron to reevaluate everything about their lives. Wilkerson told NPR's Kelsey Snell that even though Benny and Byron didn't know everything about their mother, she is still their mother who loved them very much, and that's also a part of their identity.

Curious City - Traveling Parties: A Queer Chicago Culture of Partying as Resistance

The history of traveling queer parties in Chicago is rooted in exclusion and racism. This week, we spoke with Pat McCombs and Vera Washington — longtime organizers of Executive Sweet, a traveling party focused on Black lesbians that got its start in the 1980s. We also talked with Tori and Jae Rice of smallWORLD Collective, a group that organizes events today — and learned how queer Black organizers have been at the forefront of traveling parties in Chicago.

Everything Everywhere Daily - All About the Galapagos Islands

Located approximately 560 miles or 900 kilometers off the coast of Ecuador lies a chain of islands that are like no other in the world.

These islands have been instrumental to our understanding of both biology and geology, and remain a place of intense scientific study today.

In addition to scientists, it draws tourists, photographers, and even podcasters, from all over the world.

Learn more about the Galapagos Islands and what makes them so special, on this Episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
